Japan vs Senegal
Maybe Japanese were bit lucky with the development of the match against Colombia, but also knew how to exploit the situation in the end. It was far away from an easy game and maybe more difficult than what was expected after a lead and man more on the field, but no doubt that the Japense left the field fully satisfied.
Already in third minute Colombia stood playing with a man less and a penalty was awarded for Japan which Kagawa converted into goal. Colombia tried to respond and did well till they had energy, leveling up in 39th minute via Quintero.
However, it was mostly all about Japan in the second halftime as Osako sealed the victory in 73rd minute. It was simply too much for Colombians to cope for the entire game with a man less. Japan now has surely boosted their morale and feel much better, but their chances are far away from perfect ones.
They know that they need to go for a victory again, being tied up in very balanced group and awaiting their third round game against Poland with a lot of uncertainty as well.
Okazaki should lead their attack. Inui, Kagawa and Haraguchi should be his offensive support. Their formation should remind of 4-2-3-1 style. They have no reason to make any changes for this one.
Senegal, on the other side, also managed to get a victory in the first round winning over Poland maybe a bit unexpectedly with a 1:2 result. Even though they were slight underdogs on the paper, they proved to be very tough nut to crack and looked very dangerous with the ball to their feet.
They somehow left the ball possession to the Polish team which wasn't that fluid and couldn't create the best possible chances. A bit against the flow of the match Senegal took the lead in 37th minute via an own goal and it was easy for them to play from that moment on.
They were waiting the opponents on counter attack and did well with such strategy - doubling up the lead in 60th minute via Niang. Polish side spent the rest of the match attacking but all they could do was to reduce the deficit via Krychowiak in 86th minute. Same as Japan, it was great start for Senegal but the team can't rely on taking just a draw here.
Africans should be playing with Sakho and Niang in attack in something similar to 4-4-2 formation. Diafra Sakho could be given more playing time this time.
- Senegal have scored at least 2 goals in 8 of their last 9 matches (FIFA World Cup).
Senagal already showed that they don't need much in order to score - similar to Japan. Both teams are still in need of points and need to seek a victory here, while they both move the ball fast and are far from reliable teams in the defense. Both teams scoring and over goals seems like the most appropriate choice here in a game which should decide one of the participants of last sixteen phase.
