Vitesse vs Excelsior by Meese
Vitesse comes from fifth straight game without a victory in Eredivisie, as the team took a point in away game against Heerenveen last weekend following 1:1 draw. Needs to be said that the game itself was quite a defensive one from both sides and only got a bit more interesting in last twenty minutes of it. Visitors took the lead with a goal from Baker in 72nd and then paid the price of being way too passive in last ten minutes.
Heerenveen leveled up the result with a goal from Veerman six minutes before the end and the teams went into passive set up of play towards the end again. At least, this was improvement for Vitesse after straight defeats at home against PSV and Heracles, now trying to improve impression in front of own fans. They slipped down the table to eight position now, having just a point less than play-off placed Utrecht, therefore this game remains a must win for them not only cause of the standings, but also to finally revert the things around and improve the atmosphere.
Vitesse should be lined up in 4-3-3 formation with Nathan, Wolfswinkel and Foor as forwards. Only injury absentee for the home team should be central defender Maikel van der Werff (8/0).
After six straight defeats in Eredivisie, Excelsior finally managed to get a victory last weekend, winning at home over Sparta Rotterdam 3:2. It was one of the more interesting matches of this round, where the visiting side controlled the ball for the most of the time, but surprisingly, Excelsior was the one who looked more mature as a side and deadly serious in front of opponents goal.
Visitors took the lead in 22nd via Brogno, but the hosts quickly reverted situation into their favor thanks to quick goals from Elbers (26th) and Ribeiro in 30th minute. Things became even easier for them once Hasselbaink scored from the penalty kick in 65th minute, while all the visiting side was able to do till the end of the match was to reduce the deficit with a goal from Dumfries. After this victory, the team is above the relegation positions having two points more than these sides, but also just four behind play-off placed Utrecht.
Players of Excelsior should be playing in 4-3-3 formation with Elbers, Hasselbaink and Ribeiro in attack. Central defender Arghus (1/0) is injured, as well as offensive midfielders Luigi Bruins (10/1) and substitute Anouar Hadouir (9/0).
- Vitesse are undefeated in their last 6 matches against Excelsior.
Vitesse remains a favorite here even though they didn't win in previous five league matches. However, after Excelsior ended a run of six consecutive defeats, I see them quite competitive here and nowhere close to being outplayed by obviously out of form home team. Narrow victory should be the best scenario for Vitesse in my eyes.
