Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid by Jimeno
Villarreal controlled the ball a bit more in the previous LaLiga game away to Leganes, but actually couldn't do much more and had to leave the field satisfied with a point taken in a goalless game. Despite their ball possession, home side players were a bit more concrete and if any of the teams was to score, that would probably be Leganes.
Villarreal contineus to be sixth at the table after that point, having no victory in previous three LaLiga matches, as they now stand three points behind Champions League placed Real Sociedad, but also just two points above eleventh placed Celta Vigo for example. During the midweek, they won over Steaua 2:1 in Europa League game at home, securing the knockout stage at Spring from the second position and nine points earned in a 2-3-1 record overall.
Villarreal is set to play in 4-4-2 formation with Sansone and Bakambu in attack. Forward Roberto Soldado contiues to miss from the start of the season without performing so far anyway. Injured are also midfielder Alfred N'Diaye (5/0) and offensive midfielder Samu Castillejo (14/1). Doubtful for tonight's game remain central defender Mateo Musacchio and midfielder Denis Cheryshev.
Atletico Madrid didn't manage to pull out a victory last weekend in front of own fans, when the team welcomed Espanyol and were held to a goalless draw. However, it needs to be said that the home team didn't outplay the opponent, since they had more of the ball possession, but that was it. Espanyol was doing well, threatening on counters and staying decently at the back, surely deserving their point.
Atletico now has only one victory in last four rounds, as they slipped down the table to fifth position, but ares till only a point away from fourth and Champions League position. During the midweek, the team suffered narrow defeat in Champions League against Bayern Munich 1:0 on the road, quite deservedly this time, but no one will be disappointed since they previously secured the first position with five victories earlier.
Atletico Madrid should also continue playing in 4-4-2 formation with Gameiro and Griezmann as strikers. Forward Alessio Cerci is a long term absentee, while the guests also miss left back Filipe Luis (13/0) and midfielder Augusto Fernandez (3/0).
- Villarreal have seen under 2.5 goals in their last 7 matches against Atletico.
Villarreal have won just one out of last five Primera matches and the team is desperate to revert the things around. They remain in poor offensive form, while Atletico Madrid isn't briliant either. I give way more chances to the home team to stay undefeated here than the bookmakers do.
