Lajovic vs Sonego (By: Stanioooo)
Dusan Lajovic and Lorenzo Sonego will meet each other in the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo.
That's their first match H2H, so it's hard to compare them, but what's obvious is that Lajovic is the more experienced player and with a higher ranking. But that's just on the first view.
Lorenzo Sonego has much more matches on clay during 2019. He impressed me a little bit in Casablanca during the previous week- he has some groundstrokes from the baseline which will be hard for returning even from Rafa Nadal. He plays without any pressure and maybe that's the reason he reached second quarterfinal in a row. Last week Tsonga stopped him after 6:3 6:2, but the result is very tricky if you didn't watch at least highlights from the match or the whole match. Two harder service games for Lonego with chances for a break and Tsonga somehow did it. Now it's time for Dusan Lajovic, a totally different player from Tsonga, who is not so convenient on serve in comparison with the Frenchman when he is in form, but with outstandingly good performance on return.
Dusan Lajovic, as I already said, doesn't have a lot of practice on clay during the season, but his performance is more than superb. He eliminated players like Dominic Thiem and David Goffin, two very tough opponents on clay, in straight sets. That speaks a lot about his form, but the key factor for his wins was his performance on return. He put both of them under big pressure during the whole matches and there were just a few games without going to breakpoints or winning the games after deuce situation/s. But there is something which is quite similar between Goffin and Thiem and that's the fact they both like to take part in long rallies. We know Goffin is not even close to his best right now, while Thiem has a style hitting the ball a lot behind the baseline. I don't underestimate Lajovic, these two wins were really huge, but Lorenzo Sonego is a player with different style from them. He is looking for winners, his service works very well, especially the 1st and gives him easy points. He plays without any pressure and I am not sure if Lajovic will be concentrated the way he was against Thiem and Goffin where he wanted to prove he is not the outsider. Now he is the slight favorite before the match and I am not sure what influence will have upon him.
Firstly, I was thinking to go with Lajovic after his both phenomenal wins in the last two rounds but expected to see odds like 1.50 max for a win. In most of the sites, the odds are 1.70 or above, so I think bookies are also reading my minds or I am reading theirs. This match is not expected to finish so fast in Lajovic's favor. Sonego also impressed in this tournament and Lajovic is not a player who will scare him, that's not Nadal or Djokovic! I really don't know what to expect here- a lot of breakpoints and breaks or easier holds of their service games. All at all I believe both of them will go for the win and we will see a longer match, probably in three sets or two longer ones. I am going with the over 22.5 games here and 2:1 for Lajovic as sets prediction if I have to point something. This one is not expected to finish so fast for the Serb, both of them are still without a dropped set and finally at least one of them will do it.
