Dimitrov vs Struff (By: Stanioooo)
2nd round match in Monte Carlo between Grigor Dimitrov and Jan-Lennard Struff.
Both players are close in the ranking and have three matches H2H. Dimitrov has the lead with 2:1, but their first match was in Futures final match in Germany during 2010, so no need to look at it, because they are alderady grown up players. In Stockholm 2013 Dimitrov took a comfortable two sets win with easiness, but in 2017 here in Monte Carlo Struff eliminated Dimitrov at the same stage(2nd round) after 4:6 6:3 6:2. I still remember this match- the weather conditions were too bad for playing tennis- low temperature close to 10 degrees, slowly clay-court conditions and after the match Dimitrov announced he was thinking about withdrawing of the tournament, because of illness. It happened in a period when Grigor reached SF in Melbourne and also won the trophies in Sofia and Brisbane. His start of the season was excellent, then he had weaker Indian Wells and Miami, but somehow I expected him to start good in Monte Carlo, which is almost like his 2nd "home" tournament as he lives there. It has to be said Struff just outplayed Dimitrov in this match and I expect the German to put a very good fight against Grigor tomorrow.
Grigor Dimitrov is out of form, everyone who follows tennis knows that. He had a problem with his shoulder and missed so many tournaments after Australia. He decided to take part in Miami, but all he did was to reach the 2nd round losing to Jordan Thompson in straight sets 7:5 7:5. Here in Monte Carlo he started well with a win against Matteo Berrettini- 7:5 6:4, but it has to be marked that Dimitrov was broken in the beginning of both sets. Both players had a lot of break chances, they didn't serve well at all, but Dimitrov was slightly the better one on the court and eliminated his opponent.
Struff also started with a tough win against Dennis Shapovalov in three sets- 5:7 6:3 6:1. In this match we also saw a lot of breaks and break chances, but Struff deserved his win much more after a brilliant third set. He had a few good moments during the season after he reached the SFs in Auckland and also 4th round in Indian Wells after beating Alex Zverev quite easy in straight sets. During the last season he reached the third round in Monte Carlo before losing in three sets against Alexander Zverev. He proved he can move well on clay and of course, hard courts suit him better, but he is aso able to produce surprises on clay courts.
What I expect from both players is to make another close match with a lot of break opportunities and long rallies. Of course, the unforced errors will be a lot, when we have Struff and Dimitrov on the court, but it rellies also to the number of winners. Struff is not expected to give up easy, he already has a win against Grigor in Monte Carlo two years ago and will want to eliminate him once again. I highly doubt about Dimitrov's moment physical condition as his serve was on very poor level in the 1st match and that could be crucial tomorrow against much more dangerous opponent like Struff who can be very aggressive on return. My pick here is +2.5 games AH for Struff, as I believe it will be enough against Dimitrov even if it goes to three sets and the Bulgarian somehow eliminates his opponent. Struff to win a set is also a good option, but with much lower odds about 1.50.
