Medvedev D. vs Albot (By: Iniestaone)
Second round match from Monte Carlo between Medvedev (#14) and Albot (#45)
I will continue riding on Albot's form which he seems to have brought to Monte Carlo as he defeated Bedene in two sets (6-4 6-2) in his first round as an underdog at similar odds as he is today.
Medvedev is coming off a seemingly big win against Sousa in the first round by 6-1 6-1 but Sousa was dreadful in that match, the sheer amount of unforced errors he hit is something you never seen from a player who builds his game around continuity and stability. Medvedev will not have the same luxury against Albot who I expect will play just as solid as he has done all season. Medvedev is, much like for instance Khachanov who we watched earlier today, a bad clay courter and he doesn't produce good results on this surface, he is too stiff and doesn't move around agile enough to be a threat and especially not against players who have those abilities like Albot does.
Medvedev's clay court stats these recent years are also quite telling of his level on the surface: he is 1/0 this season so far, he was 1/5 last season, 0/4 in 2017. He has positive stats from '14, '15 and '16 because those matches were played on Futures and challengers. When he stepped up to ATPs, he managed to maintain the positive results on hard and indoor but he couldn't do so on clay because he isn't made for this type of surface.
To me its obvious that Albot is once again being underestimated by the bookies, in the first round he was expected to lose because Bedene is a big clay courter and Albot had no clay court matches played yet this season and this time he is expected to lose because Medvedev is the better ranked and more successful player but I think Albot will win this and progress, nothing speaks for a Medvedev victory here
