Sonego vs Khachanov (By: Iniestaone)

Second round match from Monte Carlo between Sonego (#96) and Khachanov (#12)

Another top tier player that i think will have a tough start to Monte Carlo is Khachanov. He is in quite poor form and has taken a lot of unexpected losses during the first quarter of the season and he enters Monte Carlo having played zero matches on clay, on top of that he does it against Sonego who is 12/6 on clay this season so far and playing very well.

Sonego defeated Vatutin, Berlocq, Djere and Haase in straights before losing to Tsonga in Marrakech and he followed it up by playing the qualifiers in Monte Carlo where he got past Nishioka in three, Trungelliti then gave him a walkover win and he knocked out Seppi in the first round in two sets. He won that match 7-6 6-4 and he was controlling the points so well on his serve, he won 91% of his first serve points and throughout the match he gave away zero breakpoints which is an amazing feature for the slowest clay court on the tour.

I expect Sonego to have a good start against Khachanov as well, he is much more adapted to the surface and Khachanov does not get a lot out of his game on clay courts, he is a hard hitter whose groundstrokes simply don't do enough damage when the pace is slowed down and he has never gone very far in Monte Carlo in the past. He is definitely good enough to defeat Sonego despite the surface disadvantage but he will need time to adjust to the conditions and with Sonego already having played so many matches on clay, especially on clay that matches the one in Monte Carlo, I think we'll see a first set win for Sonego.
