Nishikori vs Gulbis (By: Iniestaone)

1/8-finals from Rotterdam between Nishikori (#7) and Gulbis (#81)

There are a lot of ways one could on this match aside from a moneyline win, I think a good bet is Gulbis to take a set at around 1.90 or Gulbis to win the first set but I am backing him to cause the upset

Nishikori defeated Herbert yesterday and it was a much harder match for him than it should have been. He lost the first set 3-6 and looked very bad at match point in the third set as Herbert had three breakpoints which he could not convert. One has to remember that the result from that match would've been bad against even a well rested Herbert, but this was a Herbert who had played five matches in Montpellier with the last one being the finals just two days before his match vs Nishikori. He was fatigued and Nishikori did a very poor match anyway. This was his first match since Australian Open where he had to retire to Djokovic due to his right thigh so question still remains over his physical status

Gulbis on the other hand did an amazing job in his first match vs Copil and as I said in my preview for that match, despite losing in the qualifying final to Simon he was still very good in those matches vs Stakhovsky and Simon. He has played six sets here and was only broken that one time against Simon. He is showing great form in Rotterdam and I see him taking another win.

You almost convinced me on a Gulbis win but have decided to go with good reason over emotions. Firstly it is now quite some time since the Australian Open took place and it follows that Nishikori would have needed a match like Herbert to shake of the rust in-between. we can only say what we know about Herbert rather that throwing in assumptions to butress statements. to conclude that Nishikori played against a tired Herbert as a yardstick for measurement of form is simply rubbish. A thrre set win against the form of Herbert we saw last week is about right to set Nishi up for the week ahead. I expect Gulbis to play well and deliver a serve feast as must as I do not expect to see a better Gulbis than the one that I have known over the years. Nishikori will eventually warm up and win most of the rallies when ball is in play and cut the erratic Gulbis down to size.

Gulbis...amazing talent but a spoiled brat with the mental toughness of a raging bull.
He either won't give a sh$t about this game or Nishikori's returns and defense will piss him off. Either way, avoid this guy at all costs unless you bet against him.

I like your tips and i follow occasionally. I just don't like this one because Gulbis is a clown, not an athlete.
