Ani vs Kvitova (By: Stanioooo)
Opening match during the daily session between Petra Kvitova and Amanda Anisimova.
They have one direct match(last season in Indian Wells) and Anisimova took a surprising straight-sets victory. Anisimova is somehow very strange and special player as she plays like an experienced one, while she is only 17 years old. She uses flatter shots, which are very accurate, but when you play aggressively against her like Sabalenka did in some parts of their match, she got totally confused and her defense became average. She earned some big wins in Melbourne till now beating Niculescu, Tsurenko and Sabalenka in straight sets, but now will face an opponent on totally different level as current form and confidence.
Kvitova is just on fire. I follow her since the start of the season and the progress in her performances is steady and noticable. She is able to put herself into a big trouble making lots of unforced errors during one set and then in the next one to see absolutely different Kvitova on the court. Best example is the final in Sydney against Barty. During the rounds in Melbourne her prrogress is obvious. She makes less unforced errors and her serve works better and better. She is left-handed, serving with a lot of variety and I don't expect Anisimova to feel comfortable on the court during most of the time.
Kvitova is one of my favorites to become a winner in Melbourne together with Angie Kerber and Serena Williams. They are obviously in best form(don't underestimate Sharapova, Halep, etc), but still there's a difference between all of them. Serena and Petra Kvitova are trying to be even ultra-aggressive during most the rallies and that leads to more winners and unforced errors, but they just don't let their opponents to dictate the situation on the court. This will be very important tomorrow for Kvitova against Anisimova(not to give the American the chance to dictate the rhythm of the rallies). Angie is less aggressive in comparison with last season when she cruised over her opponents until Halep stopped her in the SFs in three long sets. This season the German looks very calmed, but amazingly good defensively and ready to challenge the best for the title. I still don't think about the chances of any of the players to grab the title, it's an early stage(1/8 finals), but some of the women just catch your eye. Kvitova is obviously one of them and I can't imagine the draw to stay without one of the main favorites so early in the tournament.
My pick is Kvitova to win this match easy or hard and to progress to the quarterfinals. She has no losses in the 4th round in Melbourne and don't see this thing to change tomorrow. Twice she reached that stage and progressed to the QFs and SFs.
I read a lot of comments about yesterday's match Williams-Yastremska, that the Ukrainian had real chances to take a set or even something bigger against Serena, because her performance till now was superb, but we saw what happened-6:2 6:1 for the American. Here I don't expect such an outcome- still have the feeling this will be a close match, but with a huge favorite.
