Sandgren vs Kohlschreiber (By: Stanioooo)

Semifinal match in Auckland between Tennys Sandgren and Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Both of the players look very solid during the tournament and are yet without a dropped set with three straight-sets wins. I really don't want to talk about who has easier draw till the SFs, because in nowadays tennis everyone can beat everyone if you don't play on good level. I just want to talk a little bit about their matches from yesterday's schedule. You can see their previous two rounds matches'stats in a lot of sites. I also talked about the opponents Sandgren faced in my last preview.

So, Tennys Sandgren had a meeting on the court with Leo Mayer and the Argentinian impressed me during most of the time how he wanted to speed the ball almost everytime in his second or third shot during the rallies, especially when he was on serve. Tennys had a lot of difficulties against the style of his opponent, who was also serving very well, but finally in the end of the set he used his chance and broke him for the final 6:3. Tennys big first serve and very solid play from the baseline helped him a lot. In the 2nd set it happened almost the same with the exception that Mayer was like a cat with 9 lives. Tennys faced so many break point chances and he couldn't succeed to break him. Sometimes it was because of his opponent's excellent first serves, sometimes because of his fear to play aggressively and with block returns he just gave Mayer the chance to speed the ball and made winners in these deciding points. Unforced errors also took part in these moments of the 2nd set. In the tiebreak Sandgren looks a little bit more solid and all at all he deserved this straight-sets victory with 6:3 7:6. He didn't face a single chance on his serve to be broken.

When we talk about Kohlschreiber he faced Fabio Fognini and it was expected to be a long and equal match, but it just didn't happen. It finished 6:3 6:1 for Philipp and the result was absolutely deserved, but not because the German played exceptionally well, it happened mostly because it was one of those days, when Fabio is only physically on the court. Fognini's performance was awful, he made dozens of unforced errors, 0 aces against 7 double faults, terrible footwork and he showed almost no soul during the whole match- no emotions like he didn't even care if he will proceed to the next round or not. Believe me, if for example Federer had to play against Fognini after this performance, I doubt the Italian would take more than one or two games for the whole match. Kohlschreiber just made what he has to do- he waited for unforced errors and for another one, when he had a chance, he made winners. There were a few longer games with deuces and most of them were also won by Philipp. I don't know if this was the best preparation for the German before much harder opponent like Sandgren. because the American looked like he takes the tournament very seriously.

Both of the players have one match during 2018 in Monte Carlo and Kohlschreiber won with 6:2 6:2. Maybe that's the reason why bookies think he will have the edge also in this match before it starts. Everyone knows that playing on clay gives the returners bigger chance to make better returns against the big servers. Sandgren rellies a lot on his 1st serve, that's true, but he also have the play from the baseline. I don't think Kohlschreiber will easily prevail in the rallies from the baseline against the American. Sandgren has better serve than Kohlschreiber, that's obvious and it is expected to help him a lot for easier points and games. He also didn't face a single break chance on his serve in the last two matches against Cecchinato and Mayer, so that's another reason to believe he can stay very close in the result during the match. The motivation is also different, because they are playing for a place in the final and it's almost impossible to think one of them will cruise over his opponent easily.

I was thinking what pick to make here- Sandgren +1.5 sets ot Sandgren +3.5 games, but chose to play Sandgren + 3.5 games. If you play it in bet 365 you will have to wait a little bit for the start of the match, because now the line there is only +2.5 games, which is much riskier. In such kind of matches one game difference in handicap means a lot!! This game handicap gives also an option to win if the match finishes in straight sets for Philipp, so I think it's better option. You can also try with Sandgren to win a set(it's an option now available in both sites) if you don't have to wait for the start of the match in bet 365 to play the games handicap. Still games handi is the priority here!

This must be hard and interesting match to watch. Both players looks impressive. On one side we have Kohlshrieber which has a lot of experience and he can controll the game. I see him to win this one but if that hapend it wont be easy because on other side, Sandgren Tennis is practiclly at home and dont forget as the Grand Slam in Melbourne is next, Sandgren need points fro QF at GS.
I think that needs just one victory which help him to be ready for Grand Slam. So he will be play to get last point. Therefore it is very hard to predict which one of them win.
My pick is +22.5 games @1.90
If I would pick someone it would be Kohlschrieber!
