Haase vs Ferrer
First round match from Auckland between Haase and Ferrer
So this promises to be a great match between last year's semi finalists Haase and Ferrer. The latter is 36 years old now (soon 37) and has deteriorated a lot because his playing style is based on running a lot and returning as many balls as possible, which is harder to do the older you get unlike big servers like Karlovic who turns 40 in a month but could still stay on the tour for several more years. Still, Ferrer impressed a lot of people in Hopman last week as he took a set from Zverev before losing the match and went on to defeat Ebden in two and Pouille in three.
Haase has only played one match this season and that was a 7-6 4-6 6-7 loss to Jarry in Doha. There's not a lot to make of that for this match with Ferrer. This encounter in Auckland holds much more importance for both of them. Haase has a much better serve and Ferrer has a better return game. I'm not expecting them both to hold their serves until 5-5, but I am expecting a very even first set and a faster second that will go to whoever wins the first. Haase started as a favorite here but now the odds have dropped on Ferrer making him the favorite. This is most likely influenced by his performance in Hopman cup but Haase is still a contender for him on a fast hardcourt and he will be able to hit past him many times. In turn, Haase will surely have twice as many unforced errors making this an even match.
