Coric vs Medvedev D. (By: Stanioooo)
3rd round match in US Open between Borna Coric and Daniil Medvedev.
These two players have 3 matches and Coric leads 2:1, but the stats is not the best thing to look for. There is a little extra info, because in only one of them both players were equal, in fresh form and have to play in standart format. What do I mean? Well, only the match in Wimbledon 2018 was between two fresh players in a battle 3 of 5 sets and Medvedev showed pretty much domination on the court winning in straight sets 7:6 6:2 6:2. The other two matches which were won by Coric were a little bit different. First of them was in the end of 2017 in Milan, where played the best youngsters for the year. They were played in different format where 4 games in a set meant you won it. It was still a battle 3 of 5 sets, but the matches were quite quicker and one break in such occasions is pretty enough for a set. Coric still won the match 3:1 sets. In the other match between them in Cincinnati 2018 where Coric was also the winner, Medvedev looked tired and made so many mistakes. It was one sided match at all and Coric won in straight sets 6:2 6:3. Borna left early in the Canadian Masters and had much more time to prepare for the tournament in Cincinnati, while Daniil Madvedev started from the qualifications in Toronto and played five matches before losing to Alex Zverev. He decided to play in the tournament during the next week in Cincinnati, where he also started with two qualification matches against Christian Harrison and Nishioka, but the fatigue was more than obvious in his performance, although he won both matches in three sets. Against Coric he had no weapons to challenge him.
About their performance after Toronto and Cincinnati- Borna started well in US Open with 4 set win over Florian Mayer and win in straight sets against Carballes Baena, while Daniil Medvedev also earned two wins against Donskoy in straight sets and Tsitsipas in four sets, but he also won the title last week in Winston-Salem without losing a set. BIG RED LIGHT here!
Some of his opponents in Winston-Salem were very tough like Johnson, De Minaur and Ryan Harrison, but he eliminated all six of them with only one set in all 12 after tiebreak. He is more than confident right now and knows how to break his opponents, showed it against Tsitsipas where infact he could won in straight sets, but after being 2:0 infront and 4:2 in the 3rd set he lost concentration for about 15 minutes and had to play fourth set. I expected to see a little fatigue in his first match against Donskoy during the 1st round, but there were no signs of that, so maybe this format with one day off the court before the next round is much better for him than playing almost every single day in the smaller tours. He looked fresh against Tsitsipas, so now he will face another energenic player, where I don't know in how much sets, but I am pretty confident Medvedev will prevail over Coric. The Russian is not from the class of Alex Zverev, Djokovic, Nadal or Federer, but he has all the weapons and the form to eliminate a player in not rising form.
Odds are quite equal, Coric is the slight favourite in this match, but with the great Medvedev's form right now and he also won their only Gland Slam match this year, I am going with him in this youngster battle.
