Thiem vs Thiem
Quarterfinals in Hamburg are clear and top 3 seeded players are still in the tournament. Their names are Dominic Thiem, Diego Schwartzman and Pablo Carreno Busta. It's unnecessary to say they are the main favourites to win the title. So, why I pick Dominic? It's simple..
Last season the tournament was weaker than this year, because N1 seeded in 2017 was Albert Ramos and the final was between Leonardo Mayer and Florian Mayer. The trophy was won by Leonardo Mayer from Argentina and infact he is still in the tournament and will face Diego Schwartzman in the QFs, but it's really hard to imagine he has chances to defend his title in 2018.
My first and only choice for the trophy is Dominic Thiem. Everyone knows about his brilliant performances on clay and he proved them once again in 2018. He reached the Roland Garros final and lost it against Nadal, the same happened in Madrid, bur the loss was by Alex Zverev. He also won two titles on clay during 2018 and they were in Lyon and Buenos Aires. These two trophies are from ATP 250 category, while ATP Hamburg is from category 500, so it's more prestigious and I doubt Thiem will underestimate any of his next opponents until grabbing the trophy. I was sure he will be hungry for this title after his 1st round exit in Wimbledon against Marcos Baghdatis. And everything went smooth in the first two rounds when Dominic beat Corentin Moutet and John Millman with difference in straight sets. His next opponent is Nicolas Jarry from Chile and it's obvious who is the favourite, maybe for another straight set victory. In the SFs it's expected to play against Carreno Busta, while in the final against Schwartzman or Leo Mayer.
Stats against Diego Schwartzman- 3:1 H2H after two wins on clay, both in Rio De Janeiro.
Stats against Pablo Carreno Busta- 6:1 H2H. Five of the matches were on clay and it's 4:1 for Dominic. Have to mention that their first two matches were in Futures and Challenger series when both won one match, so in the time when Dominic became a top 10/20 player they had 5 matches, 3 of them on clay and all were won by Thiem!
He looked focused in his first two matches and I doubt it will chance in the next rounds. If he continues with such a superb display on the court in Hamburg I doubt any of the players will have any chances against him. None of Schwartzman and Carreno Busta looked in such a good form in the first rounds to have a real chance to compare with Thiem this week in the final stages!
