Makarova vs Giorgi (By: Stanioooo)
4th round in Wimbledon and Ekaterina Makarova will face Camila Giorgi.
They don't have any matches till now and are totally different in every aspect. Makarova is very tall, left-handed, while Giorgi is rather short than tall player and is right-handed. Also their ways to the 4th round were absolutely different. How can we make comparison between them, when we see that Giorgi eliminated Sevastova, Brengle and Siniakova, while Makarova eliminated Martic, Wozniacki and Safarova. Giorgi looks like a huge underdog in this match for me. Will try to give some facts about my pick, which is obviously Makarova.
Giorgi is a player with two fourth rounds in Grand Slams in her career and that's all. Also they were a long time ago- Wimbledon 2012 and US Open 2013. Giorgi knows she is in this round, mostly because of the opponent in her last match. Siniakova just missed to beat her in straight sets, leading 6:3 4:2 and then in the 2nd set tiebreak the Czech was leading 4:1 points. The loss of this set just finished her mentally and experienced player like Giorgi used that in the third set. If Makarova faces such golden opportunity, you have to be fool to think she will miss it.
Makarova can help herself tomorrow with stable performance on serve and bunch of aces. Also she knows what's the feeling to be in QFs in Wimbledon, so that's a huge opportunity for another one. The worst thing is the fact that it's almost guaranteed her next opponent will be Serena Williams, maybe the biggest favourite for the trophy. I will be glad to watch Serena Williams and Ekaterina Makarova in the QFs, where the Russian will have her chances for the win for sure, but first Serena and Ekaterina have to win their fourth round matches against Rodina and Giorgi.
To sum up, Makarova is just better overall than Giorgi. The Italian makes so many unforced mistakes during the tournament, so she has to reduce them drastically, if she wants to have any chances for the win. Also I just can't bet against a player, who showed iron nerves and won three three-set matches against brilliant grass-court players like Petra Martic and Lucie Safarova and the champion from Australian Open Caroline Wozniacki. The Russian to progress is my pick here, although her next match at first sight looks like going to the hell, but still everything can happen!
