Bennetau vs Francis Tiafoe (By: Stanioooo)
2nd round match in Wimbledon between Julien Benneteau and Francis Tiafoe.
These two players can be almost like father and son- the French player is 36, while the American is still 20 years old. They are close in the ranking, in similar form, with only one grass tournament during 2018 and it was in Queen's, where Tiafoe reached the QFs beaten by Chardy, while Benneteau was eliminated one round earlier by Mannarino.
They don't have direct matches, which is not in help when we try to make good previews, but I will rely on what I have as their start in Wimbledon and their play at all during the season. Benneteau plays his last Wimbledon in his career after his announcement he is going to retire at the end of the season. He will try to give his best at least in french tournaments and GS tours, but it's not sure how far he can progress, because his opponents are also hungry for big results especially in the Grand Slams. Benneteau started with 3 set win against Marton Fucsovics, but this match finished that way mostly because of the very weak performance of the Hungarian on serve. 45% 1st serve and so many DFs doesn't speak good about your performance and chances to win the match.. Infact both of them had so many break chances during the match, but Benneteau was more concentrated and used most of them. On the other side Tiafoe started against Verdasco. No one in the tour wants to start against the Spaniard for sure, because he can produce surprises everytime he is on the court, no matter if he plays against Djokovic, Nadal or someone else from the very best. Both of them had break chances, Verdasco had more, but still couldn't transform most of them into breaks, only two, the same number as his opponent. It's a little bit strange that Tiafoe won the match 3:1, but Verdasco was the one, who won more points during the match- 144 against 140. It's important to notice the fact that Tiafoe succeeded to take both tiebreaks in the match, which can be really important, because I also expect tiebreak/s against Benneteau.
I have to say that really underestimated Tiafoe during the last one/two seasons, but he steadily progresses in the ranking and as performance on the court. At first sight he doesn't look like a player you will have much problems to deal with, but that's totally wrong. He is so variational on serve, may face some break points on his serve, but most of the time finds the right way to save them, which speaks good about his mental abilities on the court. And, of course, he can break you out of nowhere, when there are no signs, that the break in your serve is coming. So unpredictable player, with a lot of stamina, which helps with in long matches.
I expect long match here, won't be surprised if it goes into 5 sets. I chose two picks- Tiafoe to win, which is my first choice and the second is over 38.5/39.5 games. I think both of the overs can easily happen, if both of the players show their full potential. Really love to play such close matches! It's like to play Barca-Real or City-United when both teams are in form..so unpredictable and such a pleasure if you are on the winning side in the end of the match!
