Halep vs Kerber (By: Khum)

French Open

Simona Halep - Angelique Kerber

These two had some tremendous battles in the past, 5-4 h2h for the German, yet they are meeting for the first time on Kerber's weakest surface and Halep's best.

For the record, Simona has two of her 3 Grand Slam finals right here, in the past 4 years, recording a 16-4 record on the stretch.

On the other hand Angie, wining her 4 matches in order to reach this quarterfinal has just matched her total wins in the past 4 years, as she is 4-4 during this span.

So, after that enormous matchup in the Australian Open semifinal this year, when a fatigued, injured Halep surpassed Kerber on the German's best surface, people are rightfully asking themselves: are we gonna see another two and a half hours thriller.

Well, my answer is no and my bet goes accordingly.

If you see Kerber live in Roland Garros you'll be shocked on how slow paced she's hitting. Of course, she's forcing the others to hit more, and more and more till they miss. Yet Halep has no problem running with her, being the best on court mover in WTA. If you analyze al the World No1's losses on claycourts, they came after big hitting from the opponents. No big hitting, no problem.

I see Simona Halep winning something around 6:4, 6:3 and going further where she would face a more difficult opponent in Garbine Muguruza or Maria Sharapova ... yeap, big hitters.

Let's go green!

Actually, it's 5-4 for Halep, and they did meet on clay in Fed Cup in 2016 when Kerber won 6-2, 6-2. And Halep's last beatdown was against Svitolina in Rome's final, quite the opposite of a big hitter. But i agree with the pick. Good luck!

You-re right :)
I've put the h2h wrong.
Yet that indoor claycourt I won't count as the condistions were very different from a outdoor claycourt (not mentioning that Simona had a injured ankle).

As for Svitolina, since their last year meeting here, in French Open she's hitting big against Simona and in various other matchups. It's not the nature of her game that made her known for the tennis fans a few years ago, yet it's a upgrade she has added to that game in the recent period. She's hitting like it's nobody's business :)

You can notice I didn't wrote that the loss was against a big hitter, but after big hitting from the opponent, so I didn't point on Svitolina, but on her game in Rome.
I guess we've both seen the match.

Best of luck to you too!

There's always a way for any player to win.
If Cecchinato is in the Roland Garros semifinals, there's always a way ;))
Yet, I bet mostly on matchups than on general trends.
