Dellien vs Quiroz (By: Khum)
ATP Challenger Vicenza
Hugo Dellien - Roberto Quiroz
For the past years I have been knowing Hugo Dellien as a former college tennis player who was especially good in the bolivian ITF's and challengers, capitalizing on the altitude conditions the opponents weren't used to.
Yet at the end of the last season and mostly this year he started to upgrade his play, his results and his ranking. And there's a story behind that, a very nice one.
Bolivia has over 10 milion inhabitants, yet no much of international sporting awareness. Some months ago the bolivian tennis federation have set Dellien as their banner and they offered him a team and financed his development. And it's paying dividends. The guy has won the first challenger trophy in tens of years for Bolivia, in Sarasota. Then he has made the semifinals in Tallahassee. Then he won the trophy in Savannah. Actually he took over the american claycourt challenger circuit.
These weeks he came in Europe where he lost in the French Open 2nd round Qualies to Adam Pavlasek, after which came back in the challenger circuit, in Vicenza. This time he's got the respect of the bookies but still beat them twice, against Lopez-Perez and Polmans.
Today he's got as a opponent his doubles partner for this week, with whom they've got a very good win in the 1st round as underdogs, losing in the QF to a italian pair (people following the challenger tour know some of what that means).
Quiroz is a decent challenger player, but not more than that. His serving is good while he's not much of a on court mover.
I think Dellien has the shape, the quality and as doubles teammates for 4 matches he has all the knowledge on Quiroz' strenghts and vulnerabilities in order to win today. And to beat the bookies once again, winning against the spread as well.
Let's go green!
