Sevastova vs Mladenovic
1st round match in Rome between Anastasija Sevastova and Kristina Mladenovic.
Both of the players are performing under their level and that's the reason they dropped a little bit in the ranking. Sevastova is N20, while Mladenovic is N30. Sevastova had to defend points in Madrid and when I saw she will play against Bertens in the start, I was sure she will lose, because the Latvian eliminated Bertens in the same tournament previous year, time for revange to be exactly correct. Then we saw what Bertens produced on the court.. In the previous tournament in Charleston Sevastova reached the SFs when she lost to Goerges..none of the players on her way here something special- Barty is not in form and not a clay-courter for sure, Krystina Pliskova just doesn't have the class of her sister Karolina who's much better player and Caroline Dolehide- not the best US player for sure.
Mladenovic had some problems trying to find her rhythm and form in the recent months. She was with 4 matches in a row loss streak, which is not typical for the French. I liked the way she played against really progressive player like Anet Kontaveit. She lost against her 7:5 6:7 6:7 in Stuttgart, but showed she is coming back to her right form. Then in Madrid she eliminated Vandeweghe and Zhang before her loss against really motivated Sharapova. It wasn't strange she lost against the Russian in the battle of two similar players- tall with groundstrokes from the baseline, sometimes having lot of problems on serve.
I really don't know what to expect from both of them. It will be a little bit cold 15-16 degrees during all of the day, but that doesn't give any advantage because they are keen on such conditions-France and Latvia and not the hottest countries. They have only one match in 2010, but let's talk serious- it's unusual result, because at this time Mladenovic was 16 years old, while her opponent 20 years old. Bookies give advantage to Sevastova, the odds are something like 1.60/2.25 in most of the places I checked, but it's obvious the match will be really close. I just don't trust Sevastova at all- last year the was so good on clay, but this year is unconvincing. Mladenovic also made QF in Roland Garros and that's the next tournament, so one or two wins in Rome can stimulate her much more to repeat what she did last year in France. I see the value with Kristina, although it's tough to predict who will win. Just don't trust the two best Latvian players anymore, while Mladenovic looks like she steadily finds her best rhythm on the court.
