Leonardo Mayer vs Nicolas Jarry
1st round in Estoril and a match between the 7th seeded Leo Mayer and the Chilian Nicolas Jarry.
Leonardo Mayer is 30 years old Argentinian and his best results are on clay. I don't think I surprised someone with this statement, but he has 4 ATP finals and all of them are on this surface including two titles(all of them in Hamburg). He became father last year and has a son Valentino, but he's not finished yet for the big tennis. The difference between him and Nicolas Jarry is not big- Mayer is N45, while Jarry is N65, but the difference in age and the experience on clay courts is totally in Mayer's favour.
Jarry is 22 years old player from Chile and relies so much on his big serve. In fact both of the players ate very tall- Mayer is 1.90m, while Jarry is close to 2m, but Mayer is better in rallies. Jarry has a stunning forehand, so if he wants to dominate, he has to use it more and more when he gets chances. It's not hard ro predict Mayer will play most of the time on Jarry's backhand, although it also looks safe, because he did it with both hands, not like some other players with one-handed backhand.
It's hard to tell who's in better form. I don't think it's useful to talk much about their results in the start of the year, when they played some tournaments in South America in Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Rio and Quito. There's a big difference when you play in Europe or in S.America for example, not only the time difference. Jarry's results were better in these tournaments including a final in Sao Paulo, but in Portugal it will be totally different. He was not convincing losing to Benoit Paire in the start in Barcelona and I won't be surprised at all if he gets another early exit. The courts in Estoril are fast, which is good for both players, but the weather is not the best one, it's even cold in the late afternoon with temperatures about 15 degrees. When we know this is the last single match in the daily schedule and will finish maybe after 8 pm GMT I don't think the conditions will be the best one for both players.
They have one match and it was in the start of the year in Melbourne, when Mayer totally dominated his opponent winning the match 3:0 (6:2 7:6 6:3) with very comfortable display. Now on clay I expect something different, Jarry to put more pressure over Mayer in much colder weather than in Australia and if his serve works good, he can be really tough opponent, but I don't think it will be still enough against Leo Mayer.
I believe the Argentinian will progress here even after a three set match. Good luck!
