Lajovic vs Monfils (By: Iniestaone)
Its very rare to see Monfils here in South America for the winter season. Usually, after he drops out of Australian Open, he plays the French ATPs, then Rotterdam and his clay season doesn't begin until Monte Carlo in mid March. I don't know why he has decided to make this switch but I don't think he has played very well. He didn't impress at all in Quito where he defeated Ruud in three and lost to Monteiro in the following round. He made a strong entry to Buenos Aires defeating Cuevas in two sets as a very, very slight favorite. Monfils is 171/91 on clay all together but the majority of those matches have been in the early stages of his career, he is usually not a very good clay courter at all.
Lajovic defeated Bagnis 7-6 6-4 in his first round in Buenos Aires. Its not easy to defeat Bagnis on Argentinian clay but he did it and he was only broken once. His serve was working well and he had 2 aces per set. Monfils had 0 vs Cuevas which is quite telling because he has a very strong serve.
If there is any surface where Lajovic can beat Monfils its South American clay. He is very experienced here while Monfils is practically making his debut on this specific circuit. I believe the class difference between them will thus mean nothing and Lajovic who is very reliable on clay will win this one.
