Shapovalov vs Tsonga
Second round of Australian Open. Denis Shapovalov against Jo Wilfried Tsonga. IMO this could turn out to be one of better matches on today's schedule. On one side super talented Shapovalov, the raising star from Russia while on the other French veteran and someone who it's biggest success in career achieved exactly here in Melbourne. Namely, Tsonga was finalist at AO in 2008 (defeated by Novak Djokovic). But even in his veteran years, the big Frenchman still rules in Melbourne. He defends here quarterfinals from season ago. Simply, these conditions here in Melbourne suit perfectly for Tsonga.
Tsonga was quite good in opening round but don't expect easy task when he face Shapovalov. Namely the Russian teenager his best tennis plays when face big names of ATP. He already beat Tsonga in their only mutual meeting. It was on last season US Open, 3:0 was back then. Shapovalov is only 18 years old but already among Top 50 players on ATP tour. So obviously he is a real deal cause the last one who was Top 50 while being younger than 18 was Rafael Nadal in 2004.
I think Shapovalov will be difficult opponent for Tsonga once again. Cause Tsonga has one big disadvantage and it's his backhand. This is especially visible when Tsonga needs to face a left handed opponents and Shapovalov is one such. So to be honest I'm leaning towards Shapovalov and if I would need to pick here winner, probably I would give slight advantage to Russian kid although Tsonga is set for favorite. But, I count on the above mentioned fact how Tsonga is always extra motivated here in Melbourne due to his early career success at AO. So probably is better to skip winner market for this match cause everything is possible. But one thing is sure IMO. It's sure this should be very tied and super interesting match. I really doubt any of these two can win this in three sets. Plus knowing how good on serv Tsonga is and how this surface suit to his service, knowing Shapovalov in opening round allowed just one break of serv, I get impression that beside at least four sets we will see here also one or two Tiebreak set.
So, over the totals should be first choice in this match.
