Nicole Gibbs vs Victoriya Tomova (By: Stanioooo)
1st round in Australian Open and a match between Nicole Gibbs from the USA and Victoriya Tomova from Bulgaria.
Well, I don't know how they put these odds for the players here but Nicole Gibbs being a slight outsider in this match- that must be a joke. Victoriya Tomova finally is the first racquet of Bulgaria after Tsvetana Pironkova was at the top of Bulgarian women tennis for so many years. Now she doesn't play because of pregnancy and maybe she will not return to WTA, we will see, but Tomova doesn't have any remarkable wins in her career. Her biggest win is against Julia Goerges after winning the first set and the German retired during the second. This is her first appearance in the main draw of GL tournament and that's a big achievement for her, cause she is only 22 years old, but the story is looking to end in its start. Our women tennis is in big crisis cause we don't even have a player in the top 100. Karatancheva, Tomova, Pironkova, Evtimova, Shinnikova, Elitsa Kostova- all of them stay at the same level for so long and only Tomova has a little progress. In fact Tomova started from the qualifications, where she beat two opponents and then lost to Anna Blinkova but she's in the main draw as a lucky looser.
Nicole Gibbs(24 years old) is far away from the best US players, but she plays good enough to keep herself close to top 100 (she's 113 in the ranking). Last year she progressed to the third round of Australian Open after beating Irina Falconi and Timea Babos before losing to Serena Williams. I don't expect too much by her- maybe 2nd or 3rd round but she has everything to progress. It's not the best feeling to play against your compatriot, but please, debutant in such a major event being a slight favourite against a player who reached the third round here last year- that's funny. Three set win for Gibbs by me!
