Tampa Bay vs Detroit by 20Legend
Tampa Bay Lightning is starting a new season with a home game against Detroit Red Wings tonight. Tampa Bay is aiming for continuing their streak and reaching the playoffs for a thrid season in a row. However, they have lost in the first round in both of their former tries, but they have a strong squad to do something about that this season. The most important was to re-sign star-center Steven Stamkos and defenseman Victor Hedman. In addition they managed to extend Nikita Kucherov’s contract by four years earlier this week. That makes the core still intact for this team and they are strong contenders for winning the Stanley Cup in my opinion.
The team has looked quite good during the preseason, but it is naturally to not put too much effort into those results. Five games have resulted in two wins, one win after overtime and two losses. An interesting addition to the team has been the youngster Brayden Point impressive with both goals and assists. Winger Ryan Callahan is not going to play as he has a hip-injury and he is not expected to play before November.
Detroit Red Wings has made some major changes going into this season. One of their veterans, Pavel Datsyuk wanted to go back home to finish his career in Russia. As a result, Red Wings has added two other veterans with 32-year old Frans Nielsen from New York Islanders and 32-year old Thomas Vanek from Minnesota Wild. These players will give an addition to the team with veteran Henrik Zetterberg and the up and coming star Dylan Larkin who made 23 goals in his rookie season last year. The goaltenders Petr Mrazek and Jimmy Howard are still Detroit Red Wings choices this season.
The Red Wings has enjoyed a very good preseason with six regular wins, one overtime loss and one loss in regular time. They have also reached the playoffs in 25 straight seasons and have clearly stated that they want to continue that trend. Defenseman Niklas Kronwall is doubtful while center Ben Street is waived by Detroit.
It is no doubt that Tampa Bay Lightning has a strong team on paper and will try to start well at home with three consecutive home games in a row. Detroit Red Wings has made some big alterations before this season, but they will not go down easy with their combination of veterans up and coming youngsters. I see Tampa Bay Lightning as favorites tonight, but I think Detroit Red Wings will make it an open match. Over 5 goals is a interesting choice in this opener.
