St Pauli vs Darmstadt

St Pauli started the season in the best possible way as they managed to take a three-pointer in a 1:2 victory over newly promoted Magdeburg last Sunday afternoon. They were back in the scoreline since sixteenth minute when the hosts took the lead via Beck but improved right away.

Buchtmann leveled up the result in the 29th minute, with the players of St Pauli continuing to be better in the second halftime. Magdeburg was limited to a pretty defensive role while the visiting team stood somehow like a more experienced side and were concrete with the chances created. Finally, Knoll brought them into the lead in the 81st minute which turned out to be the final result.

  • Players of St Pauli really looked well in their last rehearsal game two weeks ago when they defeated Stoke with a 2:0 result.

Central defender Hornschuh and right fullback Jan-Phillipp Kalla are still injured and out. Right fullback Luca Zander (1/0) won't be playing here.

Darmstadt, on the other side, opened their season probably in a bit better way than what they expected. Even though they welcomed very strong Paderborn and weren't set as favorites, the home team managed to get all three points in narrow 1:0 victory.

It was quite a defensive game from both teams and nothing attractive was actually seen in the first halftime. Darmstadt opened up the second halftime with a goal in the 52nd minute thanks to Dursun, while the visitors looked bit better since then. They even missed a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, in overall quite boring game.

  • Maybe a draw would have been a bit more fair result, but the players of Paderborn are to blame for missing the penalty.

They escaped from the relegation zone last season in last weeks and surely want to avoid similar turbulence later on this season. The side had decent results in preparation period, having a draw against Huddersfield 1:1 and winning over ZRoda 4:1 in their last friendly clash.

Guests will miss forward Felix Platte who anyway didn't perform in the first round.

I expect St Pauli to attack here from the first minute and try to exploit their good momentum for as long as possible. Their defensive lineup is, however, a different story. Darmstadt looked good in previous weeks and should be able to be more than threatening here on counter attacks. Knowing that all the value lies with goals in this match.
