St Etienne vs Lyon by Lucien
St Etienne didn't need to do much in order to stay undefeated last time out away to Toulouse in quite an unimpressive game that ended as a goalless result on Saturday evening. Their hosts were just slightly better overall, but without many real chances created and without will to attack and risk more towards the end.
This was third official game without a victory for St Etienne, as they previously got excluded in French Cup away to Strasbourg, but also suffered narrow 1:0 defeat in front of own fans against Montpellier. With just one victory in last five Ligue 1 matches, the side slipped down the table to sixth position, having three points less than Europa League placed Marseille.
defender Ronal Pierre-Gabriel (8/0) is injured now, while doubtful remain midfielders Loic Perrin and Remy Cabella, as well as forward Lois Diony.
Lyon, on the other side, comes from a professionaly taken 2:0 victory at home over Metz last weekend, as they opened the game much better attacking strongly from the first minute and had that double goal lead already in 20th minute thanks to two goals from Fekir who now has nine goals scored so far in Ligue 1.
Once they had that lead, the side lowered down the tempo and allowed players of Caen to have more of the ball possession and the guests did create some chances, however the victory of Lyon was never in doubt. The side now stands at third position with three points less than second placed Monaco and continues to seek another victory, which could be their fourth in a row in Ligue 1. The side celebrated 3:0 victory over Everton at home in fourth round of Europa League last Thursday evening, now being at first position together with Italian side Atalanta having eight points, five more than third placed Apollon and almost mathemtically sure of progressing to the knockout stage.
Only absentee for this match could be midfielder Clement Grenier (1/0) who anyway didn't contribute much till now.
Lyon is a more stable side this season, obviously looking as more quality team as well than their opponents. They are trying with very attacking football away from home as well and my first option here will be goals since their defensive lineup isn't reliable this Autumn and now after three consecutive clean sheets in all competitions, it wouldn't surprise me if they show completely different face at the back.
