Schalke vs Freiburg by Gustav
After a great run in previous weeks and actually months, Schalke now has three consecutive defeats in all competitions and the team needs to respond here with much better performance. However, it needs to be said that they didn't drop significantly in form, but were playing away from home against in-form Leipzig were they probably deserved a bit, lost irrelevant Europa League game away to Salzburg with a rotated squad, but also suffered narrow defeat at home against Leverkusen in previous Bundesliga round.
However, it needs to be said that they were playing with a man less from fourth minute of the match when Naldo got excluded, but stood well on the field, with almost completely defensive role, in quite an ugly match, but couldn't hold the opponent till the very end, as players of Leverkusen scored the winning goal in 89th minute via Kiessling. The team is now down to tenth position, having only seventeen points earned which is eight less than sixth and Europa league placed Dortmund and need to figure out as soon as possible how to perform better in order to improve their chances of playing in Europe next season.
Left back Sead Kolasinac and central defender Matija Nastasic are doubtful. Naldo (18/0) central defender is suspended here. Forward FFranco Di Santo (6/0) is injured, as well as striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (8/1) and offensive player Breel Embolo (6/2).
Freiburg, on the ther side, comes into this match after a narrow home victory over Darmstadt last weekend 1:0, which broke a run of their four matches without a victory, having only a point taken in these four. Overall, it was more of less balanced game, with the home team having more ball possession, but the visitors maybe looked more concrete on times.
On some other day, the result could have been pretty different, but this time Freiburg won thanks to a late goal from Petersen which is scored from a penalty kick in 86th minute. Thanks to this victory, Freiburg now stands at ninth position at the table, having nineteen points earned and hte team is nine points above the relegation zone, surely being satisfied with their performances so far. On the road they are having a victory, draw and five defeats, which is probably too little for a side strong as Schalke in order to hope for a positive outcome. Central defender Marc-Oliver Kempf (no performance so far in the season) remains to be long term absentee, while injured are also forward Maximilian Philipp (11/5) and central defender Georg Niedermeier (5/0).
I expect Schalke to get back to their positive ways here. The team didn't have much of luck in previous two matches and this should be their payback time. Home team should prevail even easier than what the current odds suggest.
