Reading vs Derby
Hello all! Hope you've all enjoyed the World Cup?! A huge well done to France who in my eyes deserved the victory. Anyway, it's back! English football is here and I'm ready to get to some games in the Championship this season.
The first game of the season is between Reading and Derby County and will kick off at 20:00 and will be played at the Madejski Stadium, Reading.
After seeing some of the preseason warm-ups, it is pretty clear to me that Paul Clement and his Reading side will struggle to perform this season. Reading, in my opinion, hasn't been the same since they just missed out on promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs. Since then Jaap Stam struggled to get his players up for the games and I think looking at the recruitment that clement has done, he'll struggle too.
They have recently managed to get Sam Baldock in from Brighton, however, I don't see him making much of an impact. Also, Marc McNulty from Coventry has been drafted in to try and get Reading some goals. It's a huge step up from league two to the championship and for that reason, I think he will struggle as he's not proven at this level. I do like David Meyler, however, not sure he will set the world alight. John O'Shea for me is past it and his performances for Sunderland last season proved that!
Reading has had 6 friendlies this preseason and hasn't won any. I know you can't look too much into these as it's a case of fitness, however, I believe not winning in 6 will have an impact on their start to the season. They have lost 3 friendlies vs Eastleigh, AFC Wimbledon, and Palace. They then managed 3 draws vs Fulham, Besiktas and Rubin Kazan. I think Reading could struggle to survive this season and I might have a flutter on them to go down.
The away side are Derby County and they have managed to secure the management service of Frank Lampard! He is a legend and was an absolutely great player in my opinion. He is not very proved in terms of management, however, I think he will do a good job as every player will have a huge amount of respect for him and will want to perform for him.
Derby has one of the best squads in the league in my opinion and I think they will be challenging for a top 6 spot. their midfield, in particular, looks very strong. They have a good range of striking options too, they have drafted Jack Marriott from Peterborough and I think he could have a good season in the Championship as he has a lot to prove.
Derby has had a far better preseason and has won 4 out of their 5 friendly games. The only game they have lost to is Mansfield. They beat Notts County, Southampton, Coventry and Wolves. Confidence seems high in the Derby camp and with a huge fan base, I think they will be a force to be reckoned with this season. I'll be backing Derby to win on an opening day, I think a price of 2.30 with Bet365 looks great. Good luck all and welcome back!
