Pittsburgh vs Anaheim by 20Legend
Pittsburgh Penguins opened their season with a massive win against Washington Capitals (3-2 after penalties). Not massive in the meaning of winning by a huge margin, but in terms of beating a teams of the Capitol’s caliber without their biggest star Sidney Crosby.
The Penguins fell behind within the first minute of the first period which made the worst possible start against Alexander Ovechkin and his men. However, the Pens managed to come back and make it a close period even if no more goals were scored. The second period was something far different from the home team with Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornquist able to step up and turn the score around. Their defense and goaltender Marc Andre Fleury were outstanding as well. The Capitals came in hard in this game with 41 shots at goal, but Fleury has not got the nickname “The Flower” for no reason. He made 39 saves while Malkin. Letang and Kessel stepped up to score on their penalties to make Pittsburgh seal the win. Fleury’s fantastic effort will be needed in the future as center Sidney Crosby is missing with a concussion. Reserve goalie Matt Murray and right winger Bryan Rust are also missing.
Anaheim Ducks hopes to strike back after losing against Dallas Stars (4-2) away from home in their season opener. It was lack of efficiency that stood in The Duck’s way of getting something more out of the game though. Center Ryan Getzlaf was the best example with 10 shot on goal, but finished the game with no goals and a -1 rating. Even though the offense tried to work it out, goaltender John Gibson had to let four pucks go pass him in 20 shots which made it too hard. Better goalkeeping must be a minimum if points are going to come their way at this level. Defenseman Simon Despres is doubtful due to his injury, while defenseman Hampus Lindholm, center Ryan Rakell and center Nate Thompson are missing.
I think that Pittsburgh Penguins has the upper hand in this match even without Crosby on the team. Marc Andre Fleury is the first one with his red hot performance during last game. He gives the team natural energy and confidence that helps the team a lot. Being at home ice is also important with the Penguins winning the latest three games against the Ducks at CONSOL Energy Center. Evgeni Malkin has delivered offensively which is even more important now that Crosby is out. Anaheim Ducks can obviously do a lot better compared to their opener, but it looks like they get off to a slow start just like last season. The Pens deserves the stamp as favorites tonight given their impressive win against the Capitals.
