LA Kings vs Calgary
LA Kings vs Calgary Flames. On one side we have a team who is in tough playoffs race (Kings) while on the other side the team whose playoffs hopes are already over.
In such matchup, it's a must win situation for a better team.
A must win = win? Of course in high percentage this would turn out not to be true. But I think there are many reasons to believe it will be true this time.
LA Kings have many ups and downs lately. They have nice overall record as well home record. But as of late they are all the time at 50%. It's 6-6 in last 12. What more during that span they are all the time win-loss win-loss win-loss. So, the Kings were not able to start the winning streak but there wasn't losing streak either. Plus they are coming from a loss away at Edmonton so hopefully this win-loss win-loss will continue.
Defeat from Edmonton this late in the season in some hand was a failure given on fact Oilers are another team out of playoffs. But not much as loss today would be failure. Namely, Edmonton is the biggest disappointment in the season but they are in fact great team as I stated many times and if nothing else they played good hockey in several last games. So, I don't think Kings loss there was in fact big deal.
But now at home, not on the road and against opponent who is big mess (Calgary), defeat is not an option for the Kings.
Of course, given the odds we need regular time victory. This is a little bit more risky but we have numbers on our side. Namely when Kings are winning at home ice, in high percentage it was in regular 60 minutes (14 out of 19 wins). Also late results speak in favor of regular time victory. Namely in the above mentioned previous six victories for the Kings, only one was after OT.
On the other side I already said Calgary is a mess. The same as Edmonton out of playoffs race but unlike Edmonton, Calgary also right now is in the hole. Calgary is 0-5 in last five and not just they were losing in regular time those games but those were defeats with a margin. And I am not talking about two but all with three or four goals difference.
Calgary in these games had poor goaltending but also was without offensive contribution. They scored just three goals overall in last four games. That's too weak.
Furthermore, this is not only some random results crises but in fact Calgary has many issue.
The head coach, Glen Gulutzan is almost for sure out at the end of the season. Everyone there knows about these rumors and that is additional bad influence on the players motivation.
Matthew Tkachuk, Sean Monahan, Brodie... are all out with injuries. Johnny Gaudreau is out too but due to personal reasons (father's illnes).
IMO this is clear home win but if somehow Calgary would be able to deal with everything and now to bounce back and to pull out some surpring excellent game, then ok, I can accept one loss after great recent NHL run.
