Marseille vs Toulouse
Marseille had actually a pretty positive previous season, as the team reached the finale of the Europa League competition but stood short in the very end of the season. They lost the finals game easily with a 0:3 result to Atletico Madrid.
In addition to that, the side actually was very competitive in the race for the Champions League spot all season long but in the end, lost it for only one point below third-placed Lyon. However, they really looked like a rock-solid strong team and will be looking now to build upon that and surely that the Champions league placement for the next season is one of their top targets.
As for the friendly matches, the side didn't look that excellent so far winning only in one match against Nantes, out of seven preparation games. In most recent ones, they had a draw against Sporting and a 5:2 loss against Bournemouth last Saturday afternoon.
- Few of the players are still recovering from World Cup appearances and won't be playing here. Those are goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, central backs Duje Caleta-Car, Adil Rami and offensive midfielder Florian Thauvin.
Marseille could be lined up in a version of a 3-5-2 formation with Germain and Mitroglou in the attack.
Toulouse didn't have an easy or positive previous season as the team was struggling for the most of the season. As a result, they were an only eighteenth placed side in Ligue 1 and had to play play-out matches against AC Ajaccio late in May. Luckily for them, they were too strong for a Ligue 2 side and easily outplayed the opponent with a 4:0 result showing much more experience in the process.
They had also just four points more than relegating side Troyes and it's something that they will try to avoid in the new season. The team had quite a number of friendly matches before the new season but failed to get some decent results.
- More worrying is that their defense looked poor even when they did decently in the attack.
In two most recent matches, they suffered 4:3 defeat against newly promoted Nimes. Their last rehearsal game saw the team losing to Crystal Palace 4:1 last Saturday afternoon. Central defender Steeve Yago is injured. Doubtful for this match are right defender Clement Michelin and offensive Firmin Ndombe Mubele.
Visitors are set to approach this match in a version of a 4-2-3-1 formation. Sanogo should lead the attack with Dossevi, Garcia, and Gradel as offensive midfielders.
Marseille should appear strong seeking for all three points. However, the home team is missing almost complete first defensive lineup and I can't see them walking away with a clean sheet. Especially because Toulouse now know this and they can't afford to wait behind the ball - on contrary.
