Lyon vs St Etienne by Lucien
Lyon suffered yet another defeat last weekend when the team visited rock bottom placed Lorient and narrowly lost the match with a 1:0 result. It must be said that they were actually better than the opponent and did deserve more from this match as the final result stays unfair to them. However, hosts were more concrete, getting a goal in 51st minute via Cabot and then standing passively in the defense completely behind in the ball.
Even though Lyon created plenty of chances, such tactics have paid off to the home team who took the three pointer in the end. Nobody can be satisfied with the start of Lyon this season, since the team has three victories, a draw and three defeats, currently standing only at tenth position. Additionally, they suffered defeat in a Champions League second round game against Sevilla on the road and the team is now in a must win situation in order to boost their morale in front of even more important matches.
Lyon should be lined up in 3-5-1-1 formation, probably with Fekir as central striker, with Tolisso just behind him. Central defender Marou Yanga-Mbiwa (6/0) is suspended and his position will get Emmanuel Mammana. Team captain and midfielder Maxime Gonalons (6/0) is also serving one more match suspension, with Lucas Tousart replacing him. Injured continue to be Christophe Jallet (no performance so far anyway), but also striker Alexandre Lacazette (4/6), offensive Maxwel Cornet (7/1) and midfielder Clement Grenier (3/0).
Players of St Etienne continued their good form in Ligue 1 with a victory at home last weekend against Lille 3:1. The game itself was pretty much a defensive one at the start, but the major role in the game played the fact that the visiting team stood playing with a man less towards the end of the first halftime, which was exploited nicely later on from the home team.
Hosts entered the second halftime with much better determination and quickly took the double lead with goals from Beric and Nordin, while the guests responded ten minutes before the end with a reduction from Civelli. Even though though the home team had a player more on the field, they didn't create that many chances and came be thankfull to their efficiency this time, sealing the victory during additional time with a goal from Roux. The team is now at eight position with three victories, three draws and a defeat, being only five points away from the leaders from Nice before the start of this round.
Players of St Etienne should be playing in 3-5-2 formation, most likely with Beric and Roux as strikers here. Visitors are having more than few problems for this match, since they can't count at central defenders Florentin Pogba (5/0) and Loic Perrin (5/0), left backs Pierre-Yves Polomat (1/0) and Cheikh M'Bengue (2/0), right back Ronael Pierre Gabriel (4/0) and midfielders Fabien Lemoine (5/0) and Henri Saivet (2/0). Additionally, forward Robert Beric (7/4), defensive midfielder Ole Selnaes (5/0) and defensive Kevin Theophile-Catherine (5/0) all remain doubtful with injury problems.
- Lyon have scored at least 2 goals in 9 of their last 11 home matches (Ligue 1).
Lyon is missing couple of important players, but the injury crisis is even bigger with their visitors. St Etienne is undefeated since middle of August, but I don't see the visiting side being completely able to stay competitive in this match, having so many important players out. Lyon is in a need of response after defeat last weekend and I believe they'll get the victory easy or hard.
