Lyon vs Bordeaux by Lucien
Almost everyone expect them to rise and get a victory away to Bastia last weekend, especially since the home side was missing plenty of players, but Lyon managed to disappoint once again, this time suffering 1:0 defeat. They had the ball possession, plenty of it but failed to either creative either to have some dangerous goal scoring chances.
Bastia took the lead in the second half, in 69th minute via Brandao and managed to keep the clean sheet till the end, despite playing with a man less following exclusion of Cioni in 88th, in a game that probably would be more fair if it had ended as a draw. It was third game in a row for Lyon in Ligue 1 without a victory, as the team has also only one in last five competitive matches, against Chambly in Coupe de France. They are now only in eleventh position at the table, but with reasonable little points difference to European tickets - only six points away from fourth placed Nice, however the team needs to respond as soon as possible and starts collecting points in consecutive matches. Lyon should be playing in 4-3-3 formation with Valbuena, Lacazette and Cornet as forwards. They continue to miss long term absentee forward Nabil Fekir (4/4), defensive midfielder Guieda Fofana (0/0), but also right defender Rafael (13/1) and central defender Bakary Kone (3/0).
Bordeaux comes from one of better performances this season, since the team won at home over Rennes with a 4:0 result. It was a great way to respond after their humiliating away to Lille in Cup game when the team suffered 5:1 defeat just few days ago. However, they looked way better against Rennes, taking the control over the game very early, in 29th minute with a goal from Diabate.
Overall, it was quite competitive game from both sides, since the players of Rennes also had their amount of chances, but the hosts looked deadly serious in front of opponent's goal. They continued with effective attacks in the second part, scoring other goals again via Diabate in 51st, Rolan in 67th minute and via Toure in second minute of additional time. With this victory, Bordeaux approached to European tickets, being now at seventh position, having just three points less than Europa League placed Nice. Guests will also be playing in 4-3-3 formation, with Ounas, Rolan and Crivelli upfront. They continue to have quite long absentee list, since the visitors miss central defenders Gregory Sertic (1/0), Pablo (8/1), forwards Jussie (9/0), Isaac Thelin (5/0), Nicolas Maurice-Belay (18/1) and goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso (20/0). Suspended are central defender Nicolas Pallois (13/0) and right full back Andre Biyogo Poko (19/0). They were active in last couple of days of transfer market, so the team added Mathieu Debuchy, Malcom, Paul Bernardoni and Mauro Arambarri to the squad.
Following their defeat away to Bastia, Lyon is really now in a must win situation. The team earned only five points in last ten rounds, so the victory is all they aim for tonight's game. Bordeaux, however, remains quite dangerous in attack despite few players missing and I believe that the best bet for this game lies with both teams scoring. An open and attacking game from both sides is what I expect here, with enough chances for both sides to net once at least.
