Luzern vs Schalke 04 by 20Legend
Luzern’s great preseason continues as the club is bringing three straight wins to the table when facing Schalke 04 tonight. The club comes from a 3rd place in the league last season with 54 points in 36 games. 15-9-12 was their total statistics and they had 59:50 on goal difference which meant an average 3.0 goals per game. They finished the season very strong with 4-1-0 and it seems like the form has continued into the summer. It started a bit slow though with a loose against Winterthur (2-4) and a draw against Austria Lustenau (1-1), but their recent three games have been strong. Luzern come from a very strong win against Monaco (2-1) on July 12th.
Monaco had several strong names in their starting lineup with Radamel Falcao and Valere Germain upfront, but it did not stop Luzern from surprising them. The match reports gives the picture of a game with a lot of chances both ways, but also Luzern playing with a high intensity against Monaco who also used several changes. That will certainly be the key tonight as well when an even better opponent pays a visit.
Schalke is also preparing for another season in Bundesliga and as they want to do better than their 5th place from last season. Exciting players have been added to strengthen the squad both defensively and offensively with center back Naldo from Wolfsburg and striker Breel Embolo from Basel as examples. Schalke started off the summer with a preseason tour in China where they beat Guangzhou R&F (1-6) and lost against Guangzhou Evergrande (0-0, 5-4 on penalties). After returning back home from China, they faced Eintracht Rheine from the German Oberliga.
The game turned out to be a huge lesson on how to play attacking football for Eintracht Rheine as the game ended 1-9 in Schalke’s favor. The team from Bundesliga showed no mercy with offensive stars like Huntelaar, Choupo-Moting and Franco di Santo getting at least one half on to put their stamp on the match. Several others did also give a great impression in this game as Dennis Aogo, Max Meyer and Sidney Sam also got on the score sheet.
Both teams come from great games behind them and will certainly build on their performances tonight. However, Schalke looked very strong despite using almost all of their players available during the match. Luzern is certainly a much better team than Eintracht Rheine, but I am censing another high scoring game here. Luzern has nothing to lose and there will be big rooms for Schalke to attack in with quick feet and goal scoring abilities up front. Friendlies do also tend to give the weaker teams chances to score as well, due to several changes and the use of younger players from the stronger team.
I believe in a high tempo here and Schalke to set the bar high already inside the first 45 minutes. Two goals in the first half is definitely worth a try in my opinion.
