Groningen vs Vitesse by DamirJ

Groningen didn't start the season well, but they also had tough opponents in schedule at the beginning of the season and couldn't actually hope for much better record. Season started with a 1:4 loss away to Twente, then 1:1 draw against Willem II at home and 1:3 home loss to PSV. Finally, in last round they have earned the first victory winning over Den Haag away from home with a narrow 1:0 score.

It was a bit lucky win for Groningen as they scored the goal in the middle of the half-time and then just tried to defend as much as possible, without even trying to attack again. Their hosts didn't play fluently in attack, without any creativity and it was quite easy for them to keep the clean sheet. This victory brought a relief in the club as they are coming from a very poor previous season and this way the first victory for the club since March. They have sold their best player Tadic to Twente, but also have used that money to bring a few interesting player which surely did improve the quality of their team, but they will need time in order to start playing better and look like a team. Femi, defensive midfielder is out for this game, while defender Kappelhof is the only doubt for today's game.

Vitesse, on the other side, had to face up with Europa League matches early in the season and although they didn't manage to make a surprise and progress over Anji, those four matches they played in the qualifying rounds probably helped them a lot in order to get into the right for at the beginning of the season. Although the season started with a disappointing 2:2 draw at home against Den Haag, they quickly bounced back with much better performances and wins over Zwolle, Willem II and Feyenoord, without conceding a goal in these three matches.

Their latest win over Feyenoord was third consecutive, as said, in a game that was much better in the second half-time with both sides creating goalscoring chances, but the hosts were more fortunate and prevailed with the goal from Bonny in the last minute of the game. Everyone in the club could be happy as they got the second position after fourth round and more important, the team is looking very good on the field at the moment. The start of the Eredivisie is almost ideal for them, while they have won Volendam 4:1 in a friendly game played during the international fixtures. Guests will have to play without first choice right back Frank van der Struijk, while Theo Janssen (defensive midfielder recently signed from Ajax) is available for this game.

Groningen has a quality squad, but they don't seem to be in appropriate form at this moment. They are coming from a bad season and didn't start this one much better either. On the other hand, Vitesse seems to be in a perfect mood right now, playing very well, being especially stable at the back. Vitesse should be set here as slight favorites and everything below that judgement seems to be value in this match.
