Gijon vs Malaga by Jimeno

Gijon comes from pretty positive performance last time out, as the team managed to get a point away from home against Sevilla on Sunday evening. There was no doubt that the home team did much more on the field and deserved more than a point, but the visitors were also awarded for their fighting spirit and good standing in the defense.

Sevilla dominated almost the whole match, but all the hosts lacked was being more intense in the finishing touches towards opponents' goal. This was third game in a row without a defeat for Gijon, as the team previously won over Granada at home and took a point on the road against Valencia - being obviously in a pretty good form now. The side is at eighteenth position at the table, having five points less than safely placed Leganes and needs to continue impressing.

Gijon will probably be playing in 4-3-3 formation, using Burgui and Carmona on the wings, plus Cop as central striker. Central defender Fernando Amorebieta (23/0), right back Lillo (23/0), defensive midfielder Mikel Vesga (9/0) and midfielder Xavi Torres (13/0) have all picked up suspension due accumulation of yellow cards last time out. On a positive side, Douglas and Jorge Mere return from suspension. Goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar is having some problems but should be playing, similar to midfielders Borja Viguera and Moi Gomez.

Malaga, on the other side, is far away from impressive side this season and even further away from their good form, as the team comes from a 0:2 defeat in front of own fans against Atletico Madrid last Saturday evening. Visitors took the victory quite convincingly, taking the lead in 26th minute via Koke, while they sealed it in 74th via Filipe Luis.

Players of Malaga had some decent chances and more of the ball possession, but the impression is that the players of Atletico played in order to save the energy and were already satisfied with their narrow lead from the first halftime - approach that paid off to them this time. Malaga is without a victory in last six matches, having just one point taken in the progress and the side needs to react as soon as possible, since they are now only five points above the relegation zone.

Visitors from Malaga are set to play in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation, with Dias as central striker, plus Keko, Fornals and Ramirez as his offensive support. Defensive midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic (4/0) continues to be long term absentee due injury, same as central defender Bakary Kone (7/0). Left full back Juankar (21/1) is suspended, same as midfielder Recio (10/0). Forward Youssef En-Nesyri is doubtful, similar to midfielder Javier Ontieveros.

  • Malaga have failed to win their last 18 away matches (La Liga).

Malaga probably has a bit more of individual quality, but the side isn't showing it on the field. Sporting Gijon looked pretty decent in previous couple of weeks and if they show anything close to the same as they did in last three, they could be closer to obtain a three pointer. However, I expect a bit more open performance from both sides and my first betting option will be with both teams scoring a goal with surely valuable odds.
