Gladbach vs Schalke by Gustav
Gladbach weren't up to the desired level last week away to Schalke, but the team managed to pull out important 1:1 draw and now remain with better chances to progress further to the Europa League quarter-finals. They entered the game better and took the lead in 15th minute via Hofmann, but conceded equalizer just ten minutes later.
Ball possession was quite shared between the sides, but the visitors did little in attack, while there's no doubt that the players of Schalke were way more concrete and probably did deserve to score the second goal. They will now probably need to get a victory knowing offensive power of their visitors, as the side comes from a 2:1 defeat away from home against Hamburger SV last weekend in Bundesliga. They remain in the middle of the table with three points less than Europa League placed Eintracht and even though they have plenty of chances to get back in European positions race, this competition remains one of rare chances for their players to bring some joy to the fans this season.
Hosts should be playing in 4-4-2 formation with Raffael and Stindl most likely as forwards. Forward Thorgan Hazard (18/5) is injured, same as offensive midfielder Ibrahima Traore (11/0), midfielder Marvin Schulz and defender Mamadou Doucoure.
Schalke was better in the first match, didn't have much more of ball possession, but created way more chances and probably did deserve to score the winning goal after all. Instead of it, they only managed to level up the result in the first halftime in 25th minute via Burgstaller, after conceding an early goal at start.
It's a positive result without any doubt, but the team extended their winless streak now to six matches in all competitions (four draws and two defeats), but the side improved last weekend with a 3:0 victory over Augsburg in Bundesliga with all three goals being scored inside first thirty-five minutes (two from Burgstaller and one from Caligiuri). Schalke is now at eleventh position with just five points less than Europa League placed sides.
Visitors should be playing in 4-2-3-1 formation with Konoplyanka as central striker, but also with Schopf, Goretzka and Caligiuri as offensive midfielders. Central defender Naldo (25/1), left backs Abdul Rahman Baba (13/0) and Sead Kolasinac (19/2), right back Atsuto Uchida (1/0) and offensive midfielder and sometimes forward Breel Embolo (7/2) are injured.
- Borussia M.Gladbach have scored at least 3 goals in their last 3 home matches against Schalke.
- Borussia M.Gladbach have seen over 2.5 goals in 7 of their last 8 home matches against Schalke.
Over goals seems so likely outcome here, just like in most their mutual matches. Schalke now needs to attack and it's something that grant us an open match, while both teams obviously have way better offensive lineup than their defensive show reliability.
