Atromitos vs Brest
Atromitos was really close to suffering complete humiliation last Thursday evening when they visited Brest in the first leg. It was obvious that the game came too early for the Greek side into the season, however, once they took their duties more seriously they were able to amend the things a bit.
They entered disappointing into the match conceding two goals in first fifteen minutes, having a similar approach at the start of the second halftime. With twenty minutes till the full-time whistle, the side from Belarus was leading with a 4:0 result and exclusion was almost confirmed. However, the team found a way to re-group themselves and improve the things a lot.
Manousos scored the first goal in 74th minute, while an own goal and late goal from Koulouris not only improved the situation but now made Atromitos the favorites to progress further.
Their domestic season is still weeks away, while the side didn't show many special things in preparations (draws against Zurich, Grasshoppers, and AEK most recently). However, it's obvious that the last twenty minutes performance in Belarus will be morale boosting for them.
Brest, on the other side, can only blame themselves for the goals conceded so late into the match. The start of the game was perfect with two goals lead after only fifteen minutes. Goalscorers were Filipovic and Savitskiy from the penalty.
It really looked like the Greek side was falling apart and they took advantage of it. Four-goals lead was installed thanks to two more goals from Sabitskiy. However, once the Greeks started playing in last twenty minutes of the clash it was all over for the players of Brest. They are now having far more difficult task since they failed to exploit great momentum they had.
As for the domestic duties, their league is in progress and the side isn't meeting the expectations for now. They are only at the seventh position having already eight points less than third and Europa League placed Vitebsk. Their most recent game was last Sunday afternoon when they met Kletsk, lower division side in the 1/16 phase of the Cup and progressed over the opponent only thanks to a penalty kicks series.
After being almost knocked down in the first leg, Atromitos looked as a favorite in this one. With more serious approach and lesson learned already, they should outplay the opponent and seal the qualifying ticket with far more impressive performance with the help of their own fans. The Greeks should be only better and better as the start of their Superleague approaches.
