Fenerbahce vs Benfica
It could be said that Fenerbahce actually walked away with a decent result in the first leg as they suffered just a 1:0 loss. Having in mind the way they played and that the opponent was significantly better, this surely is a positive result since the Turks still do have a realistic chance to do something more.
They have started the preparation period with bit poor results as they had a draw against Instanbulspor, but also a loss to Lausanne. Victories came over Fulham and Cagliari, while the side had draws against Feyenoord and Altinordu.
- They didn't look that great in Portugal, but the things got improved during the weekend against still less quality opponent than what the Portuguese side was.
Their 2:1 victory at home over Bursaspor last Saturday evening surely boosted their morale in the season opener. However, the guests took the lead first in the 16th minute via Troost-Ekong, but the respond of the hosts was very fast.
They leveled up six minutes later via a penalty from Giuliano, while Souza wrote 2:1 in the 30th minute. There were no goals later on and once again, players of Fenerbahce didn't impress much - but are anyway playing in between two important matches and it wasn't expected either.
Newly signed forward Islam Slimani is injured. Defender Ismail Koybasi and forward Aatif Chahechouhe are injured and out too.
Benfica surely wasn't happy completely with the result of their first leg. The Portuguese side showed that they are classes above the players of Fenerbahce as a team at the moment, but failed to capitalize on that.
- This way they left a lot of room for speculations, but can also easily show once again that they are better and outplay the opponent in case the game goes their way.
Only difference happened in the 69th minute when Cervi score the only goal, while it must be said that that final result should have been a bigger margin victory for the Portuguese side. Even though their league still didn't start, the team showed a great level of fitness and teamwork for such early stage in the season.
The season has also started for them last weekend, with the team winning over Guimaraes 3:2 at home last Friday evening. The side took a strong approach and was already leading 3:0 thanks to three goals from Pizzi at the halftime. Even missing the penalty shot in an early phase of the halftime.
The opponent was already destroyed and obviously, the side lowered down the tempo allowing them to get back into the match thanks to goals from Andre and Celis in last fifteen minutes of the clash - but nothing more than that. Somehow quite logical considering they are awaiting new important match soon.
The Portuguese will miss defender Tyronne Ebuehi, midfielder Filip Krovinovic and forward Jonas Goncalves both without performing in previous few matches.
Having in mind what we've seen only seven days ago, it's really difficult to believe that the players of Fenerbahce are having a real chance here. There's some serious quality difference at the moment and since the hosts will need to open up during the game - this one can easily go completely one-sided with a bit of luck - with more than valuable odds.
