Fenerbahce vs Benfica

It could be said that Fenerbahce actually walked away with a decent result in the first leg as they suffered just a 1:0 loss. Having in mind the way they played and that the opponent was significantly better, this surely is a positive result since the Turks still do have a realistic chance to do something more.

They have started the preparation period with bit poor results as they had a draw against Instanbulspor, but also a loss to Lausanne. Victories came over Fulham and Cagliari, while the side had draws against Feyenoord and Altinordu.

  • They didn't look that great in Portugal, but the things got improved during the weekend against still less quality opponent than what the Portuguese side was.

Their 2:1 victory at home over Bursaspor last Saturday evening surely boosted their morale in the season opener. However, the guests took the lead first in the 16th minute via Troost-Ekong, but the respond of the hosts was very fast.

They leveled up six minutes later via a penalty from Giuliano, while Souza wrote 2:1 in the 30th minute. There were no goals later on and once again, players of Fenerbahce didn't impress much - but are anyway playing in between two important matches and it wasn't expected either.

Newly signed forward Islam Slimani is injured. Defender Ismail Koybasi and forward Aatif Chahechouhe are injured and out too.

Benfica surely wasn't happy completely with the result of their first leg. The Portuguese side showed that they are classes above the players of Fenerbahce as a team at the moment, but failed to capitalize on that.

  • This way they left a lot of room for speculations, but can also easily show once again that they are better and outplay the opponent in case the game goes their way.

Only difference happened in the 69th minute when Cervi score the only goal, while it must be said that that final result should have been a bigger margin victory for the Portuguese side. Even though their league still didn't start, the team showed a great level of fitness and teamwork for such early stage in the season.

The season has also started for them last weekend, with the team winning over Guimaraes 3:2 at home last Friday evening. The side took a strong approach and was already leading 3:0 thanks to three goals from Pizzi at the halftime. Even missing the penalty shot in an early phase of the halftime.

The opponent was already destroyed and obviously, the side lowered down the tempo allowing them to get back into the match thanks to goals from Andre and Celis in last fifteen minutes of the clash - but nothing more than that. Somehow quite logical considering they are awaiting new important match soon.

The Portuguese will miss defender Tyronne Ebuehi, midfielder Filip Krovinovic and forward Jonas Goncalves both without performing in previous few matches.

Having in mind what we've seen only seven days ago, it's really difficult to believe that the players of Fenerbahce are having a real chance here. There's some serious quality difference at the moment and since the hosts will need to open up during the game - this one can easily go completely one-sided with a bit of luck - with more than valuable odds.

FB DC all the way. You miss the most important factor of this bet, the two clashed a few years back at semi final. Benfica will never win in Istanbul.

  2. Sajmoon says:

Draw or Fener…benfica not win…sure 10000%…not in Stambul

  3. Johnlevelzz says:

I don’t care what you think but am sure this game will be a ov2.5…it will be an offensive game with a lot of attempt to be taken cos both team need to qualify for the next round here.

  4. jiji says:

That is the most annoying thing about you, people of Turkey . ”They will never win in instanbul” …. you think that you have the nest teams in the world but actually you have second hand teams . The preview and the prediction is very good . Benfica is a side that aspire every year at reaching the ko stages . And btw, my country, Romania, won a few years ago in Turkey, Istanbul, 1-0 Gicu Grozav :)

  5. Koner-denmark says:

Completely agree with jiji and with the preview. Turkish people are always ignorant anyway. They think that they are the center of the world.

I am wondering if you guys saw the first match, where Benfica could score three goals or more, and Fenerbahce performance was like an amateur team.

Benfica will find spaces, early or late, as Fenerbahce need to open the game in order to score.

They are a really better team in all aspects than Fenerbahce.

please lets just take it easy here no insult please

  8. KingKong says:

Will be a hard game for both sides, an early goal for Fenerbahce can change everything, the favorite in this round is clearly Benfica,
it isn’t easy for clubs to play in Turkish stadiums, quality is on the Benfica side.

  9. Grayy says:

Last year Vardar won in Istanbul in a crucial game. LOL

  10. nanmell says:

i follow the Fener since many years and i completely agree with Isaiah… Fener has nearly no chance.. they are not able to maintain passing traffic, and has not the individual quality.. Last year they lost against Vardar, at that time everyone said the same ” Noone can win in Istanbul.. hahaha Vardar won two legs …BENFICA WIN

  11. Zeph says:

Its benfica whether u like it or not

  12. Bang says:

Fenerbahce was ahead 3-0 vs Feyenoord and missed penalty. Cocu used some young players in 60th min that I didn’t even heard their names before. The match ended up 3-3. Same thing about Altinordu match. He used young players whole match.

Benfica was clearly better side in first match. But you forgot some missing key players of Fenerbahce. Ayew and Joseph will be available this time. I think Benfica will qualify anyway but they won’t be able to win. Over seems pretty good.

  13. TheSharpest says:

Don’t forget that Fenerbahce didn’t have any striker at first match. Alper Potuk played as striker. His main role is midfielder. Soldado and Ayew is coming back. Also Joseph de Souza was suspended. He’s the most important player in team. Souza is coming back too.

Don’t compare new Fenerbahce to last year’s. Manager changed. Even president of club changed.

  14. David King says:

Its better to pick draw or Benfica to win. Turkish Superlig is funny ligue as well. Of course Fenerbache has a reputation but also all of Turkey at the problems which must be reflected to soccer.

  15. BlackJack says:

I checked both squads. Fenerbache has very good players. Skrtel, Jordan Ayew, Soldado, Giuliano. Benfica lost all 6 matches in champions league last year. And they lost a few players. Fenerbache’s stadium is huge. I think 70k attendance capacity. I don’t understand why people underestimate Fenerbache. Just avoid betting in this match.

  16. hans says:

    1-1 – 87!

On the over – not happening though.

  17. hans says:

OMG – Almeida refused to score in the last minute. What an idiot!

Too easy on DC if anyone followed.
