Ajax vs Standard Liege

Ajax looked much better for the most of the previous leg away in Liege and surely can't feel fully satisfied with the final 2:2 result. They were dominant and looked impressive in the first halftime taking the lead in the 19th minute via Huntelaar and doubling up the result in 34th minute thanks to a goal from Tadic.

They even continued being better in the second halftime at first, however as the time progressed it looked like they became too much slopy. Carcela-Gonzalez reduced the deficit in 67th, while the players of Standard looked more determined to attack towards the end and it paid off to them in the fourth minute of added time via Emond leveled up the result from the penalty kick.

  • No doubt that Ajax looked better and bit more as a real squad, a unit, however, they didn't do a fully proper job in all ninety minutes.

During the weekend their Eredivisie has started, but Ajax didn't show to be fully into this match in their heads. They were better of course but weren't as concrete as they should in the attack. Goals were missing and that was probably the only thing that missed in their gameplay, as they even run into problems late into the match with the players of Heracles taking the lead in the 84th minute via Peterson.

Hosts had no much time to develop their game and respond but still leveled up four minutes later via de Ligt. Home team is set to miss defenders Sinkgraven and Veltman, both without performing so far in the season. Offensive players Bande, Cerny and Dolberg are also continuing to miss without influence so far.

Midfielder Eiting (1/0) has some problems and remains doubtful for now. Home team is set to miss defenders Sinkgraven and Veltman, both without performing so far in the season. Offensive players Bande, Cerny and Dolberg are also continuing to miss without influence so far.

Standard could be very happy with the result in the first leg. They were 2:0 back down in the scoreline already after thirty-five minutes of the game but managed to fight back and still get a decent draw outcome in the very end.

They even looked like collapsing, but thanks to a better approach and determination in last thirty minutes, the side avoided defeat and almost sure exclusion.

  • It's a difficult job now ahead of them and surely the side will need to play openly from the very first minute.

As for the domestic league, they come from a goalless game against Cercle Brugge last Saturday afternoon at home. It was a very passive game from both ends and actually close to nothing was to be seen in the offense. In any way, the team now stands at seventh position with four points less than leading duo from Anderlecht and Club Brugge.

Midfielder Bokadi and forward Lestienne are both injured with no performance so far.

There is no other option now for Standard but to try to attack from pretty much the first minute. Ajax already showed that they have no problems scoring goals, while their defensive lineup surely needs some improvements. One way or another, I can't see this match being a defensive one and with either of the teams waiting for something. A couple of goals could easily be scored already at the halftime.
