Shakhtar vs Roma (By: Stanioooo)

Shakhtar Donetsk host Roma in CL 1/8 finals at Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv.

Paulo Fonseca against Eusebio Di Francesco and Shaktar against Roma. Everyone is expecting such an attacking display on the pitch(me too) and a lot of goal chances and maybe goals. Both of the managers progressed as coaches during the years but the stats of Paulo Fonseca are incredible, especially coaching Shakhtar. Almost 80% of the Ukrainian team's matches in the domestic league and Europe competitions have been won since 2016.

His team was in winter break for more than two months and during this period they played a lot of friendlies. The results weren't the best one, but they made a lot of changes in most of the matches and tried different tactics. One of the matches was against Ludogorets and I watched the whole match. The Ukrainians didn't show more than half of what they can actually produce on the pitch and got 2:2 draw. Some of the other matches were won, other lost- that's not so important. They started the domestic matches last weekend and trashed Chernomorets Odesa 5:0 with a great performance by the main force- Marlos and Facundo Ferreyra. They don't have the competitive form of Roma, that's true, but I don't think this will influence them a lot. They beat all of their opponents in the groups(Napoli, Man.City and Feyenoord), but conceding a goal in each of them. That's the main problem for them and the chance Roma to score in this match is not excluded.

Roma were really poor during December and January when it was hard for them to win a single match, but in February they actually started to find their rhythm of play. They got 3 wins in a row against Hellas Verona, Benevento and Udinese. And their main weapon started to change with the speed of light. In the recent matches Cengiz Under is the man who made the difference and is the creative one in their team. He is like a copycat of Sallah for Liverpool. Dzeko looks like he's in a winter break and I don't think they can strongly rely on him to score in Ukraine. If I knew Roma have scored a single goal in this match I would bet on Under for sure- he's the main threat in the Italian squad for me.

Both of the teams don't have much problems with their starting line-ups. Darijo Srna will miss this match for the Ukrainians because of suspension, while Malyshev is injured. Roma won't rely on Gonalons, while Florenzi is doubful.

They have met 4 times in CL and it was surprising for me to see Shakhtar have won 3 times(both of their home games). That's not the main reason to play Shakhtar to win their home match in CL tomorrow. The main reason is called Paulo Fonseca- such a great person who is tactically perfect. There are coaches and COACHES. I think the years will put him in the second group and one day he will lead much bigger club than Shakhtar Donetsk. I really don't know and don't care if the match will finish 1:0 for the Ukrainians or 4:3 for example. Maybe the best pick will be BTTS or 1+BTTS, cause Shakhtar conceded a goal in all of their home matches, while Roma did the same in all of their away matches in the groups, but I will just play what tells me not only my mind, but also my heart- HOME WIN!

Nice pick! I agree with you. The most important reason for me is that, they had "all the time in the world", to get ready for this game. Deffenitly Roma is not such a big club, they dont have key players in attack to make something out of this game. Deko and El Sharaawy are in poor form. I also think, they are more focused to home league. I will also try with handicap!

I don't think that this time for preparation without matches is the key factor. Ludogorets were in the same position against Milan and the result wasn't the best one. I just believe in the Ukrainians and their coach, I think their inspiration will prevail and the result will be in their favour.

Shakhtar not playing for awhile may be a big factor here. match fitness is important here, and from previous years you can see that playing in February mean slow pace and not many goals for the Ukraine team. best example here is Basel which find it hard to go from playing friendlies to the intensity needed for a top club.
