Goteborg IFK vs Elfsborg
This is a meeting filled of anxiety, as two relatively solid clubs have under performed this season given their capacity. This is sort of a derby, which will add to the intensity on the pitch. The two teams have already met which finished 1-1 in Boras Arena after a 90th minute equalizer by Elfsborg.
Goteborg are going through a rebuild phase where they are changing strategy. They have a much younger squad and a very young coach in Poya Asbaghi who wants to change the philosophy in the team. Previously, Goteborg are known to be a heavy team to face but now they are becoming more possession and passing oriented with several young investments. This is due to poor finances, and they need to buy and develop players with potential and eventually sell for profit. This is the business idea before Goteborg will become a force within Swedish football again. However, they have made smart acquisitions for instance with point leader Giorgi Kharaishvili (17/5) from Saburtalo which has been an effective signing for them so far. They also recruited striker Robin Soder (3/0) from Lokeren, and Sagron Abraham (4/1) from Degerfors who led the goal scoring in Superettan. They have put a lot of focus on offensive players in order to be creative and effective on the final third. This has paid off as they have now scored in six straight home matches, and often more than 2 goals. The problem has been the defense, where Goteborg have let in many goals particularly in the last ten minutes. In total, they have the fifth worse defense in Allsvenskan which they cannot be happy with.
The hosts will miss veteran striker Tobias Hysen (15/1) but will not be weaker, as they have many attacking options to compensate with.
Elfsborg have also struggled, even more than their opponents in this match. They are currently winless in eight consecutive matches in Allsvenskan (last victory in July). On the positive side, they have now found the net in the last three matches but also conceded in the previous two. This is quite typical for Elfsborg, whose problems reminds a lot about Goteborg. They are generally more dangerous as an artificial turf team but have struggled when playing on natural grass. The last two away matches on natural grass have ended in 1-0 losses for Elsborg, against Kalmar and AIK.
Coach Jimmy Thelin is under pressure but are now coming from two draws and some goal scoring finally. This derby could very well decide both these teams tones in the board rooms for the rest of the season.
A loss in this match would surely lead to a big portion of anxiety for both sides. It is two teams who are very inconsistent but with a good level when having a solid day. Interestingly, five of the last six matches have ended in draws between these two, and six in a row with a goal in both nets. Given the two leaky defenses, lack of confidence and the pressure to win, I do not find enough backing to pick a side. What seems more likely is to see goals in both ends which has been the case in this derby more than any other fixture in Allsvenskan. For that reason, both teams to score is the prediction.
