Zwolle vs Vitesse (By: Mulder)

For many PEC was last year the best footballing team, together with AZ. At least for the first half of the season. With attractive football they ended 4th before the winter break. After the break however they totally collapsed somehow. First due to injuries but when the key guys came back it became a mental thing. They were one of the worst teams in the 2nd half of the season ( only Sparta who relegated got less points ). They became 9th in the end and they did not even made it to the play-offs as AZ whooped them with a 6-0 victory on the final day.

Anyway, this season a total different team. Saymak, their brain on midfield left to Turkey. Mokhtar, their winger left to Turkey as well. Both important players. Ryan Thomas was sold to PSV last month. Thomas was the heart and soul for PEC and by far their most important player. He was super important for the transition between defence and midfield.

Other important players that departed are Menig, Marinus and Bakker. Piotr Parzyszek, who was their first striker for the first 10 games or so went to Poland. He was just not a good player ( just 3 goals the whole season ) and Zwolle played basically without a real striker for the rest of the season. Namli somehow did not leave the club as a lot of clubs were chasing him. He was one of the best players last season. Also Kingsley remains in the Zwolle squad, which is quite suprising as Frankfurt was interested. He became the new Captain as Van Polen performs not really well.

New players are not that good. Van Crooij is looking their most important signing with two goals already. Van Duinen is their new striker, i think he is better than Parzyszek, but he was also not that special with Excelsior. Lachman played before for Zwolle but he got heavier and is not that fast anymore to play as a central defender. Most recent signing is Elbers, winger that came from Excelsior as well. Zwolle brough last month also Bouy. He played at a lot of clubs in europe the last years but even in the Segunda División B he did not play a lot of minutes. They brought him because in Zwolle he has been very helpful for their Defence in recent years, so this will be the 3rd time that he will play on loan in Zwolle. However, in his debut against Groningen he looked very heavy. Scamacca ( tall striker ) en Tripaldelli ( left back ) came on loan from US Sassuolo. I watched Samacca against Groningen and he did not impress me whatsoever.

Vitesse on the other side has a new manager, Russian Slutsky. Not so strange as everbody knows ( even if they do not admit it ) that the true owners are Russians ( Abramovich his friends ). Slutsky's men made a very good impression in the first weeks with attacking play.

With Beerens, Matavz and Linssen they have a very scary attacking line that is very good for this competition. On midield Serero ( former Ajax ) does a lot of dirty work for the team and in the back they have experience with van der Werf and Buttner. Super talent Martin Ødegaard came on loan from Real Madrid. They expect him to play in Zwolle. With defender Rasmus Thelander injured they search for a new defender only.

Vitesse is known to be a sattelite club of Chelsea and due to this connection they made a big move by bringing Chelsea talent Musanda Junior.

Vitesse lost in the EL to Basel but the truth is that they played really well in both legs with plenty of chances. Last month it was a miracle that Vitesse drew in Heerenveen as they created chance after chance.

Vitesse got trashed at home against Ajax with 0-4 but this Ajax team has the strongest squad since years. The week before they drew in Alkmaar with plenty of chances to score in the first half. PEC on the other side had a lucky win as Groningen wasted some amazing opportunities to score in the first half. Vitesse always plays well in Zwolle. They won 4 of their last 5 games in Zwolle.

They are by far the better team and with that vulnerable PEC back line they should definitely do something in Zwolle.

Police striking in the Netherlands this weekend but it is confirmed that this game will be played. Bad news is that new signing Musonda from Chelsea is injured before he even played an official game, seriously injured too, as it seems he will be out for months. And that happened in a friendly game. Squad remains strong enough, this does not change my opinion at all, but a pity for Vitesse of course.
