Slovenia vs Bulgaria

Slovenia host Bulgaria in the opening match of League C in Uefa Nations League.

Slovenia didn't qualify for the WC in Russia after finishing in the 4th place with 15 points in 10 matches, but infact the qualifications were not that bad, because they were only 3 points behind the 2nd team in the table Slovakia and didn't have a single home loss in all of the 5 matches. They finished with 3 wins(1:0 against Slovakia, 4:0 against Lithuania and 2:0 against Malta)+ 0:0 against England and 2:2 against Scotland after a late equalizer by Snodgrass. Jan Oblak withdrew from the Slovenia squd due to an arm injury, while Bostjan Cesar and Valter Birsa both retired from international duty earlier this year, Still Slovenian team has such a big potential and with players in midfield like Jasmin Kurtic, Kevin Kampl and Benjamin Verbic+ such a talented young forward like Luka Zahovic, son of the Slovenian national hero Zlatko Zahovic, who just can not stop scoring goals for Maribor and also very experienced forward like Roman Bezjak, who also played in Bulgaria for Ludogorets and will me a major threat for our defense. Tim Matavz is also a good option for the attack. Their defense is very experienced and it's easy to understand why only Scotland succeeded to score them in Slovenia during the last qualifications. Their main defensive line is made of players who play in Russia and Italy. Bojan Jokic is the most experienced of them, while they also have Miha Mevlja who plays in Zenit. The main miss for this match will be Josip Ilicic who is one of the main attacking players in Atalanta.

On the other side Bulgaria also finished in the 4th place during the WC qualifications maybe in much harder group with teams like France, Sweden, Netherlands, Belarus and Luxembourg. Bulgarian team earned 13 points, but you have to notice 12 of them were at home after beating everyone expect France. Spas Delev and Georgi Kostadinov were the main topscorers, but Spas Delev is out of Bulgarian squad for the matches against Slovenia and Norway, because of injury, In all of our away matches the team had defensive tactic looking for counter-attacks and OK, it was understandable experienced teams like France, Sweden and Netherlands used our defensive mistakes and beat us, but we also played the same way in Belarus, obviously looking for the draw and Belarus just outplayed us. In the last game against Luxembourg we were happy, because not only our opponent took the lead, but after the equalizer they missed a golden chance for the final win 2:1. Still we made a draw, but everything was a chaos in out display on the pitch. All at all, Bulgarian team showed two totally different faces in home and away matches. We looked so inspired in front of the home crowd and made such a little amount of mistakes except in the home game against Luxembourg. Away from home the defensive mistakes were flooding one by one...The coach talks about changes in the squad, he makes some of them in the forward positions and also in midfield, but the defensive line is the same for years. They make so many mistakes especially when we play as guests, but the only change I see in the squad is the appearance of Ivan Goranov from Levski. All of the other are the same- Strahil Popov, Nikolay Bodurov, Bozhidar Chorbazhiyski, Vasil Bozhikov.. No one can't trust them, believe me. Anton Nedyalkov(DF) performed very well in his first matches in Ludogorets Razgrad, but he also injured himself a few days ago and is out of the team.

To sum up, Slovenia are without home loss in the previous qualifications at home, while Bulgaria lost almost all of the away matches. Both teams have good midfield lines(I like most of out players in that part), but Slovenian forwards are better than ours for sure and also home defensive line looks much more reliable than Bulgarian. As I remember how we started the previous qualifications at home against Luxembourg beating them 4:3 after a stunning winner in the extra time, I don't have much hope for this match. In a group with Slovenia, Norway and Cyprus we have almost no chance for the 1st place and Slovenia looks like the team with best chances for the top spot. So, that's looking like out hardest test and I think we will fail in it! All is with the home side for me. I expect to take at least a draw against Norway three days later on September 9th, but in Slovenia I expect the hosts to take the three points- 1:0 or 2:0.
