Villarreal vs Espanyol prediction
Villarreal is now in a really good form and the team really does seem like a side capable of fighting for the European exit till the end.
At least it's how it looks at this moment. Most recently, they took a 1:2 victory away from home against Sociedad, despite being down in the scoreline from the 22nd minute.
They reacted far better in the second halftime, reverting via Trigueros and Cazorla, showing that football is not about the ball possession.
The side has now three victories in a row in LaLiga and looks like scoring goals easier than usual. They are now only three points behind the European zone.
Last weekend they progressed over Orihuela in the 1/32 phase of the Copa del Rey only after extra-time, however using rotated squad as well.
Cazorla, Moreno, and Chukhwueze should lead their attack in a version of a 4-3-3 formation. Central defender Albiol (18/1) is doubtful. Injured are a couple of those who anyway didn't perform so far in the season.
Espanyol surprised Barcelona last time out in LaLiga at home, taking a point in a 2:2 draw. They took the lead first in the 23rd minute via Lopez, while the visitors upped the tempo and reverted the scoreline in the second halftime.
However, they didn't use some further chances properly and got into trouble once de Jong got red-carded in the last fifteen minutes of the match. The home side took some risks and managed to level up in the 88th via Wu Lei leaving no time for the guests to respond back.
Despite a good show in the local derby game, Espanyol remains at the rock bottom position having four points less than the safe zone.
Espanyol didn't have many problems winning away to San Sebastian Reyes in the Copa del Rey competition last weekend with a 0:2 result.
They had the lead at the end of the first halftime, while the home team stood playing with a man less since the 50th minute which made the job of the guests much easier.
Tomas and Calleri should lead the attack of the visiting team in a version of a 4-4-2 style. Right-back Corchia (3/0) is injured, while doubtful remain midfielder Sanchez (15/0) and offensive midfielder Piatti (3/0).
Villarreal seems to be in far better shape in recent weeks and if the team repeats anything close to their previous performances, this should be a pretty long evening for Espanyol.
The visitors are simply far from a convincing side when playing on the road, especially at the back. They can pay a huge price for it this time.
