Rio Ave vs Gil Vicente

After two home victories, over Setubal in Primeira and Alverca in the Taca de Portugal competition, Rio Ave couldn't cope with the strength of Braga last Monday night away from home suffering a 2:0 defeat.

A goal at the end of the first halftime left them quite confused but still, the side looked improved in the second part and even had some decent chances.

Still, it was Braga who locked the victory thanks to the second goal scored ten minutes before the end.

Rio Ave is now in the middle of the table, having eight points less than fourth-placed Sporting and needs to improve at least a bit for now - trying to get consecutive good performances in front of their own crowd.

The home side should miss defensive midfielder Jambor (7/0) due to injury, while out and sidelined are probably also: another defensive midfielder Tarantini (11/1) and offensive midfielder Nuno Santos (11/1). Doubtful is offensive midfielder Gabrielzinho (6/0).

Gil Vicente surprised a lot last weekend, as the side managed to pull out a 3:1 home victory over Sporting, using their counters and fastball transition in the best possible way.

It was the guests who had the ball control, initiative overall but were nowhere close to a really threatening side.

Under such circumstances, the home side managed to play really well via counters and used these chances well, being in the lead regarding the result and in a situation to threaten even more once the guests were chasing their lead.

The team now has three consecutive victories in Primeira, interrupted by losses in the Cup competitions, but at very high ninth position for the moment.

The side suffered 0:2 home loss last Wednesday night int eh League Cup competition welcoming Sporting LIsbon again but staying without hte energy in the last phase of the game and conceding both tgoals in the last ten minutes of hte match.

The guests should miss central back Rodrigao (7/0) and offensive midfielder Mladenovic who didn't perform anyway so far in the season.

Rio Ave is now far away from the European positions and will need to improve soon in order to keep the chances high.

Gil Vicente is on a nice run, but the side certainly has overperformed a bit recently and away from home, they are nowhere close to such a self-confident side.

This is a perfect chance for Rio Ave to get back to winning ways as I can't see the guests threatening them much and I expect the hosts not to blow it this time.
