New Orleans vs Orlando by Lloyds

New Orleans will host the Orlando Magic in their season opener. The home side looked really good in the preseason but we are yet to see if those performance will transform into something meaningful. The Magic are heading toward another season of uncertainty and are probably looking forward to the years ahead of them because the roster is too young to compete at a high level.

The hosts are lucky to posses the biggest future superstar, if not already, Anthony Davis who is their main weapon this season. Davis is set to have a huge season and if there was no Lebron James, he would be the no.1 candidate to win the MVP award. Davis played great in USA's walkthrough at the World Cup and preseason. According to many experts, and by the look of Davis himself, his numbers from last season are likely to go sky high in 2014/15. He averaged 20.8 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in 2013/14 but it didn't help the Pelicans as they finished with 34-48 record in the West. However, the team looked great in the preseason having a 5-2 record. If they manage to transform those performances into something meaningful (i.e. regular season), they could finish with 40+ wins by the season's end. Led by Davis, who averaged 18.4 points and 7.6 rebounds in 25 minutes per game in the preseason, the Pelicans' future looks bright.

Orlando are coming into town with a motive but not with full squad. Their offseason acquisition, Channing Frye, is doubtful to play in the season opener while the most important perimeter player, Victor Oladipo, is out with an injury. This means that center, Nikola Vucevic, is in for a long night as he will be guarding Davis most of the time. Vucevic is one of the top rebounders in the league but at the moment he lacks athleticism to stop player like Davis. He will also have to carry the team offensively as new-look Orlando team don't have Jameer Nelson and Arron Afflalo on the perimeter anymore (those two were among the main scorers last season). The Magic had somewhat solid preseason but with this roster they simply cannot be relevant on the East.

The Pelicans look stronger on every position and having Davis-Asik in the frontcourt will be too much to handle for Vucevic. The Magic will get exposed in the paint as Davis is likely to have a great opening night.
