The last 3 times these teams played, Houston won by an average of 18 points last season in 3 blow out victories by 14, 26 and 15. Houston's biggest changes have been removing Asik, Lin and Parsons, but replaced them with Ariza, Papanikolaou and Jason Terry which gives them enough of a replacement to help them push on. In pre-season they 5 out of 7 games, out of which they played a weak team against NO Pelicans and had a close loss to the MIA Heat by 5 points.
LA Lakers are in all sorts of turmoil. Other than the fact they aim this to be another possible washout season and not having the draft pick next season (part of Steve Nash deal); they have to contend with Nash's absence and impending retirement. Additionally after pre-season they were dealt with news of having a lot of players injured for a few weeks including Ellington, Price, Young, Henry and Kelly. This adds a lot of pressure on aging bodies such as Bryant and Boozer with a lot of pressure to try and handle most of the scoring burden.
The injuries and the strength in depth play completely against the Lakers and it will be interesting to see whether Kobe will still be Kobe. Despite everything, I am someone who always take the smaller line as a safer option incase they game is all done and dusted earlier and the reserves might go on to play later on.
