Anderlecht vs Arsenal by Jamesington
Arsenal won their last Champions League game 4-1 against Galatasaray and looked very impressive in doing so, I watched the match and felt the Gunners could have had a couple more however their motivation turned to defensive work after their goalkeeper was sent off. Arsenal scored all four goals in the first half and were on cruise control by half time. Their two matches since this emphatic victory have not been so comfortable though, a loss against Chelsea and 2-2 draw with Hull this weekend will have left the team and their famously quiet fans with a real hunger for a win and their are few more likely places to get one than in Brussels.
Whilst Anderlecht are top of their domestic league, they are not nearly as strong in the Champions League. Incredibly the Belgian side have conceded 17 goals in their last 5 home CL matches and lost all 5 of those games. This is not a side which is likely to be brimming with confidence.
So, the two elements we have are a home side with terrible form in the competition that have conceded at least 3 goals in 6 of their last 7 CL home matches and an away team who are in need of a moral boosting victory, for me this leads to the likely conclusion of a thumping away victory.
One other factor must then be added to the mix - Emiliano Martinez.
The young Arsenal goalkeeper will make his first team debut this evening, due to the suspension of Szczęsny and Bravo's injury, having never played at anything like this level before. There is no reason to doubt the young man - if Arsene Wenger believes in him, then so should we - yet we must err on the side of caution and assume that Anderlecht have a chance at causing some problems. This is the main reason I have chosen not to take Arsenal on the handicap but instead backed them to score goals.
Arsenal are available to score over 2.5 with Bet365 at 3.75 but William Hill are giving 4.0 that Arsenal get to 3 goals before Anderlecht do (seeing as Anderlecht have not scored 3 goals in a Champions League group game in at least 10 years - I stopped checking at 2003 - then it's pretty safe to assume the home team won't reach 3 goals).
Back the English raiders to score and you will be rewarded. Remember we need Arsenal to score at least 3 goals (and, in theory, before Anderlecht do - but Anderlecht won't score 3 goals).
**(Race to 3 goals is what it sounds like. The winner of the bet is the first team to score 3 goals. If only one team reaches 3+ goals, then that team wins - simple.)**
