Salzburg vs Celtic by Goleador
Gameday 1: FC Salzburg - Celtic Glasgow
Both teams are currently in the situation, that they are big favourites in their league for the championship, but both teams are not leading at the time. As I know Austrian League very well I think it is the right time to bet against Salzburg, I think the first time here.
Salzburg in Austrian league was the dominating team in the last time and also this season seemed the be just another easy thing for them. However, with the loss on Sunday against WAC, they are just on second spot, behind WAC. All began with the 3-0 away loss and CL out vs Malmö, where the team from Sweden showed how the beat Salzburg: with a very physical performance, maybe a bit hard, but the right way to defeat Salzburg. Then everything continued against Sturm: Salzburg here had more posession, also more chances, but Sturm showed efficiency and Salzburg GK Gulacsi showed some weaknesses (as he does when he is under pressure, e.g. last EL season). Then there were two weeks international break, and most of the starters of Salzburg were there to play for there countries, so coach Adi Hütter had not much time to talk about mistakes and improve the team. And what happened on Sunday: WAC had the oppotunity get the first leader of the table from Austrians southest part Carinthia and the reached this with 20.000 fans in their back. Salzburg was one man more for more than a half time but didn´t use many chances, but also the offensive pressing wasn´t such aggressive as it used to be last year with Roger Schmidt as coach. Another reason could be the troubles with Sadio Mane, who left the club after he didn´t want to join the team for training.
All in all I see Salzburg weaker than last year and three losses in a row are not the best just before the beginning of the EL group stage. For Thursday definitly out are Vorsah, Rodnei, Berisha and Sörensen. Doubtful are Schiemer and Ulmer.
Celtic also didn´t get the CL qualification this year against Maribor. For sure this also was a surpise for me, as I would have estimated Celtic stronger. Anyway Celtic last year played in CL and also showed some good games. Honestly I am not an expert for Scotish League, but Celtic is well known everywhere. At the time they are in fourth spot, but with one game less and just three points behind the leaders. In the last game vs Aberdeen, Celtic could end a bad streak and win again. With skipper Brown back after injury, who showed a great performance and Tonev and Scepovic giving their debut, Celtic played very well, especially in until minute fifty. Coach Deila could use the international break with his team, to get in a good shape and he is optimistic for the EL clash: "They are a good team (about Salzburg). I think they are very disappointed they are not in the Champions League, like we are, but I think we have a good chance." The mentioned return of Brown was visible well in this game, and he and Commons made a great game and got a lot of commendation by the coach after this game.
Celtic in difference to Salzburg seemed to use the international break and could win their last game. The return of an important players and integration of new players seemed to work well. New player Guidetti on the other side won´t play, as he is not allowed in this EL game.
In the end I don´t understand such high odds on Celtic. Salzburg is in a bad form, especially with key players Kampl, Soriano or Alan not in such a form like last year. There is a way to beat Salzburg and Malmö, Sturm or WAC found it. I think Celtic can also find it, or play it least draw here.
