Uruguay vs Costa Rica by JerryDrake
Estadio Castelao, Fortaleza
Costa Rica should be stronger than in their last World Cup participation in 2006 when they lost all three games. This national team can count on a good goalkeeper (Navas 53/0, Levante), one expert central defender (Umana 82/1, Saprissa), and a mixture of good attacking midfield players and strikers: Campbell (33/9, Olympiakos), Ruiz Gonzalez (63/13, Fulham), Borges (62/14, AIK Solna) and Bolanos (55/2, Copenhagen) where the yount talent can be found in 22 years old Yeltsin Tejeda (22/0, Saprissa).
Dreaming of another Maracanazo
This World Cup is special for Uruguay. In the only World Cup organized in Brazil, it was Uruguay to win the title. It was 64 years ago and Uruguay defeated Brazil in the last decisive match played at Maracana. Uruguay have won two World Cup titles in 1930 and in 1950 and reached the 4th place in 1970 and 2010. They are the reigning South American champions (as winners of the Copa America in 2011) and have in Oscar Tabarez a well prepared coach. For this match Suarez is doubt while it should be Forlan to play in the attack together with Cavani.
Costa Rica achieved the second place behind the United States with 18 points, 3 more than Honduras and 7 more than Mexico. Álvaro Saborío scored 8 goals in this qualification campaign but he is injured and missed the chance to play in Brazil. Uruguay arrived 5th in South America behind Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador and they qualified by defeating Jordan in the playoffs.
Tonight there should be rain in Fortaleza and high temperature (around 30 degrees Celsius). In the first games we have seen many goals (4 in Brazil - Croatia, 1 in Mexico - Cameroon but could have been 3, 6 in Spain - Holland and 4 in Chile - Australia, average 3.75 per match). I imagined to see a World Cup similar to USA 1994 with high temperatures. Compared to 1994 we have already seen many games played under the rain. The teams seem to be willing to play open and taking risks. There are two possible bets here as I am not going to back Uruguay at 1.40: an „Over 2.5" bet or the possible surprise, Costa Rica to win. I try both.
